Nzoner's Game Room>Four major art projects for new KCI terminal revealed
neech 10:50 PM 04-09-2021
The first of four major art projects for the new single terminal airport at KCI have been revealed.

More than 1,000 artists from around the world submitted inquiries after Kansas City announced an international search for artists.
The city said the four works of art were chosen because they either reflected the wonder of travel or Kansas City history.

The budget for artwork at KCI’s new terminal is $5.65 million. Kansas City’s single-terminal airport is expected to open on budget and on time in early 2023.

“The fact that we’ve been through a pandemic over the last year and yet this project remains on time, on schedule, and on budget is a testament to the good work of the team,” said Justin Meyer with the KC Aviation Department.

You can see the renderings of the art projects in the gallery below.

Entitled "Molten Swing"

Entitled "The Air up There"

Entitled "Ornithology"

Entitled "Fountain of Resonance"

"Molten Swing" looks kind of like a mosaic dog or cat to me, it might look cool though but not sure what to make of it at this point.

"The Air up There" simply looks like some lights on the ceiling, again it might look better when you're actually there I hope.

"Ornithology" reminds me of those attacking creatures in the Pitch Black movie. You just knew one of the artwork they chose would have a WTF moment and this is it.

"Fountain of Resonance" I approve of this one.
:-)

Thoughts?

The only thing I will miss is those set of chairs that were tucked away in a small alcove (landside) that guaranteed no one would sit next to you.

They should have a room where you can practice joining the Mile High Club.

What sort of weirdos like to hang around in airports? They are the modern day Greyhound and Continental Trailways bus terminals.

Give the new airport 10 years and it will be a rundown shithole like everything KC maintains. Any bet on how long those bars and restaurants last?

Every time I fly into Las Vegas airport I get to see the very beautiful artwork(pictured). KC could adapt to something similar.

TBH, I wasn't impressed with the Vegas airport. Yeah, they had slot machines but the food/beverage options were lame. I expected something better.

Agreed. There are a few hidden gems but most are left to be desired.

Guessing there's great BBQ at the KC airport?

The video of the new terminal showed Meat Mitch which I believe is in Leawood by one of the Char Bar partners.

I have not had and have never been super high on Char Bar but probably pretty legit for airport BBQ.

I'm gonna make max use out of the sensory room experience. Aaron Rodgers might fly in just for that.

(I also watch videos at 1.5-2x speed depending on how fast they talk)

My out of towner crybaby story was when I flew into KC and didn't have Uber or Lyft downloaded on my phone, so while it was taking forever to download, I called the main number for a taxi and they said I had to call from an inside phone. I told them I was like 10fl feet from an inside phone and they said they needed me to call from an inside phone so they knew where I was calling from, so I looked up and told them which door I was at and they insisted I called from an inside phone... so my download was about finished so I told him nevermind I'll get a Lyft.

So, thanks for spending those millions in tax dollars or whatever so I can get a Lyft. :-)
So really, your story has nothing to do with the airport but rather your lack of preparedness in making sure you had the apps you would need downloaded before you left home?

*your lack of preparedness in traveling back in time a decade to when airports didn't have Uber/Lyft/Taxi stands.

KCI is super convenient, you're just steps from being outside, where you can then call someone to drive 30+ minutes to pick you up!

It's never about "art vs. no art" or "art vs. pot holes or homeless", it's about "quality work vs. quackery". I won't try to decide that here from pictures, I just hope these turn out to be of greater quality and interest than the old "oil running down the string" piece at the old Blue Ridge Mall.
