Chiefs general manager Brett Veach revealed on Thursday that the team has had some promising conversation with Ford and his agent. While the discourse has been good, it doesn’t rule out the chance the Chiefs could use the franchise tag on Ford.
“It’s certainly a possibility,” Veach said of the franchise tag. “We met with his agent Adisa Bakari a few days ago, had great dialogue.
“It’s a little bit tricky because no one’s showing their hand and what they’re going to do, so it’s a little bit of a guessing game. But the good thing is we were able to speak to him after the season (and) we spoke to his agent and we’re on the same page.”
Veach did not reveal the specifics of their discussions, but with the franchise tag deadline rapidly approaching we should know where both parties stand in the coming days. For now all signs are pointing toward the linebacker getting hit with the franchise tag, and a long term deal coming afterwards. [Reply]

Ford is getting signed. And if they REALLY want him to be a Chiefs, that's the best course of action for 2019. Hopefully they can structure the contract in a way that prevents it from being another Berry/Ford situation. [Reply]

I wondered if this was why we were dragging our feet with the tag.

Actually no. I've always said if they don't want to trade him and genuinely want to keep him, they should sign him. The team has many, many needs and having him taking up $16M of cap space isn't what 2019 needs.
If they're going to sign him, make 2019 easier to fit, and protect themselves against injury, it's totally the right thing to do. [Reply]

DJLN and I had talked about it before in a draft thread but our best bet is something like a 4 year deal that we can get out of in 3. I'll go look and see if I can find the conversation. [Reply]

Just tag this year, let him go. Find a long term replacement in one of the next two drafts.
So you structure the contract to protect the team against exactly that.
Tagging him hamstrings 2019. With his injury history, you're just asking for 2019 to be another "there's always next year" year.
Sign him long term, get some free agents, win the Super Bowl, and let the rest work itself out. [Reply]
