Nzoner's Game Room>2019 Free agency Thread
O.city 03:24 PM 02-05-2019
We don't really have one of these yet, so figured we could use this as a place to discuss potential free agent acquisitions and what we would like to look for them to bring in.

If any of you guys are interested, heres a good place to do some research.

2020 cap is in real good shape at the moment. $53 mill without adjusting the NFL cap.

Yes, we'll have to extend some guys; just saying.

We could absolutely absorb a FA corner contract if we wanted a guy.

You could but the problem is you're gonna have to move some cheap money draft picks to do it.

I don't know if it works out.

Just not any good options out there where it's easy. Hitting on draft picks quickly is ideal.

Trading back gives you potentially two starters, or 8 years of cap friendly deals, as opposed to 5.

Or more likely, 1 player on a 4 year cap friendly deal you'd like to extend at the end of and one that either is let walk or just sucks.

Draft picks tend to be overrated.

Yeah I’m for this. I think the plan is likely to get the safety position covered and have a stop gap at CB (again) then attack it in the draft next year when it isn’t such a shallow well of talent.

well, yeah, that's always the case.

Reality is if you get 3 starters from a draft you killed it.

I just think of it as throws at the dart board. I’d rather have two seconds than one first all day everyday.

Sure, but with those 2nds you've gotta move farther away from the board.

We ain’t done yet.

“Is there reason for concern with the @Chiefs defense? Of course, but don’t sleep on Chiefs GM Brett Veach. He’s not sleeping. He’s not sitting on his hands. And I don’t think he’s done.” - @PSchrags pic.twitter.com/MwdRINWnB1

You're not wrong; however it's also the only real way to effectively re-stock your team. You just have to develop guys at a high rate. You can't guy buy guys in free agency all the time, not in the cap era and not when you're going to have to pay the best QB in all of football.

Green Bay hasn't been wrong in their approach; they've been wrong in their coaching and development.

Yeah, for sure. You've got to draft and develop cheap talent.

But people overrate picks a lot. Like you said earlier, if you can get 2/3 starters from a draft, you're doing pretty well.

Shrags said a big move is coming whether that be trading up in the draft or signing a big time player on the last year of his contract. Veach has a plan

depends on talent groupings.

For instance; in most of our mocks, we end up drafting Adderley at #29. Now; Thornhill, for instance is almost the same player; and might be better based on his experience against superior opponents. But he's ranked lower and could be had a round later.

The 2nd tier corners are all bunched pretty close in their ceilings; and any one of 5 guys could be real good #2 corners with a possibility of being #1's. They spread out due to scheme fit all the way into probably round 3.

2nd tier DE's will all be gone before round 3. Some speed rush specialist types might make round 3 but only because they're going to be 3-4 fits only, which doesn't really help us. Gustin would be a late #1 or early #2 except for his long injury history and is worth taking a late round flyer on just in case he's been unlucky.

So depending on which group you're targeting, you can get comparable talent by moving down. OR you may need to move UP.

Signing a player on the last year of his contract like a current Chief or trading for someone in that situation?

I'm sure he's right. Veach has been very aggressive with the roster at every level.
