The Chiefs view Mahomes as the eventual replacement for Smith, who has two seasons left on his contract.
"I think [the Chiefs are] committed to me [only] through this year,'' Smith said. "That's just the nature of it. If you don't go out there and perform, I mean, coach [Andy] Reid and [quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy] are very honest. You've got to go out there and do your deal. We all have to.
"Whether or not we drafted Patrick, it doesn't change that, right? If you're not good enough and didn't get it done, you're not going to be around long. That's just our culture. I know it. That's the nature of the position.''
Smith went through a similar situation earlier in his career when he was with the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers drafted Colin Kaepernick in the second round in 2011. Midway through the following season, Kaepernick replaced Smith as San Francisco's starting quarterback, and Smith was traded to the Chiefs after the end of the season.
Quarterback Alex Smith has two seasons left on his contract but acknowledged Wednesday in his first public comments since the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes II that his time in Kansas City might soon be over.
"There is a little similarity,'' said Smith, who turned 33 earlier this month. "I'm an older quarterback and they drafted a kid that's coming in young and they're looking to develop.''
One major difference is that Reid and the general manager who brought him to the Chiefs, John Dorsey, are still in place. The coach and general manager who drafted him with the 49ers were long gone by the time San Francisco brought in Kaepernick.
"This is a completely different coaching staff and a completely different team,'' Smith said. "I think I'm a much different player.
"In that sense it's very different. They did bring me here and I've been here four years. I'm in my fifth year now. It was different there. Those were still new faces, so to speak, and I wasn't necessarily their guy or anything like that.''
Still, the addition of Mahomes represents the first legitimate threat to Smith's starting job in Kansas City. Reid and Dorsey have said Mahomes is some time away from being ready to play, and that they are committed to Smith for the interim.
"I've been through it,'' Smith said. "I'm in a different place than the last time I kind of dealt with something like this [but] I get it, right? If any of us were the GM, this in my opinion might be the most important position in all of sports. You'd be crazy not to be stockpiling talent.
"So I get it, going into year 13. You understand it. At the same time it doesn't change my focus, right? I still feel I've got a lot of years left in me. I still feel like I'm getting better, to be honest with you.''

And then you have Andy Reid saying "I don't worry about Alex on this," head coach Andy Reid said, according to the Kansas City Star's Terez A. Paylor. "Alex knows we trust him. Alex is the starting quarterback. Nothing is going to change there. The kid is going to take some time. He understands that."
I made a bet with someone with actual cred on CP. You know, someone who doesn't make mult accounts with his boyfriend to spam the board. Get lost, loser. [Reply]

I have no mults that I post under. Ask the mods. Oh wait...you don't trust the mods either because they are all "against" you.

If Garropollo is fools gold, Smith would be a bargain option on a 2-3 year deal since Smith feels like he's in shape to play for several more years. The other place I think he would be get offers if he hit free agency is with Denver, the Chargers as they'll need a temp after Rivers or Bruce Arians if he's still coaching the Cards.
:-) Alex Smith will never play for a Bill Belichick led team you stupid f**k. [Reply]

A record like 2-14 is far from a SB, losing in the divisional round two-years in a row by a combined 9-pts is not far off. Not to mention we have beaten the SB champs several times in recent seasons with Alex.

Alex doesn't care about stats unlike you fantasy football lovers, all he cares about is winning.
The Chiefs record is always the most important stat and he has a pretty good stat in that regard especially considering we were a 2-14 trash team before he got here who hadn't won a playoff gm in like 40-yrs. [Reply]

I have NEVER 'rode your coattails'. I don't even know where you get that shit.
I told you yesterday exactly what I did. In case you forgot:
Spoiler!
Let me direct this at you, Tigger.
I use to be somewhat like you. Like many on here, I tried to come up with every reason I could think of as to why Alex Smith still had room to grow in this offense. I came up with every excuse in the book for his shortcomings, and tried to ignore them as long as the team was winning games. All the while, I knew that what the Chiefs were doing was never going to get us to the promise land.
You see, in the NFL, a franchise QB represents a shortcut to a Super Bowl championship. The better the QB is, the easier the path. And for the last 4 years, the Chiefs have been taking one of the longest routes of any team in the league. They have made up for it with a top notch 53-man roster, as deep as it is talented. Credit to John Dorsey and the coaching staff for patching up the weakness at the QB position for so long.
So, I made these excuses for Smith all these years. Even during 2016, though I knew he was playing in piss poor fashion, I continued to give him chance after chance to prove everyone wrong. I think I speak for many here when I say that, we made these excuses for Smith because we did not have faith that the front office would soon make the move to replace this mediocrity. It felt as though we were hitched for the long haul.
But then, in the most glorious way, John Dorsey and the entire FO/staff realized that this SB path was much too steep, and they went out and got the guy who they believe can cut this path down to its shortest possible distance. The kid who nearly this entire board has rallied around would soon become a Chief. His name-- Patrick Mahomes II.
And so now that the Chiefs brass has awoken from the same fairy tale that many including myself were living in, this chapter will soon come to an end. Except for a few dumb bastards on here including yourself [Tigger], we have all awoken to a brighter tomorrow in the Chiefs Kingdom.
One led by Patrick Mahomes, beginning as late as the start of 2018.

Steve Bono was the starting QB for a Chiefs team that went 13-3, does he get your same high regards for his "winning stat"?
Alex Smith was mostly a bystander in the Chiefs first playoff win in 20+ years that you reference... a win that was mostly a result of the Chiefs defense and Brian Hoyer's meltdown. [Reply]

Steve Bono isn't Alex Smith. Terrible comparison.
Anyway, Alex Smith did fine in that Texans playoff game and seeing how Hoyer played should show you that he isn't as bad as many of you make him out to be. You talk about him like he is Hoyer or Ryan Leaf. It makes a lot of you look stupid.
Btw how'd he do in that Chiefs-Colts playoff game? [Reply]
