I get the logic in terms of taking the points. If this was against a AFC South team, I would agree with that thinking.

However, this is the Chiefs offense that is very much capable of scoring 21+ points relatively easy in a quarter, field goals isn't going to help you.

What made his decision not to go for it much worse was the fake punt on the subsequent drive.
