I wasn't a fan of his whole "context" bit, but editing out the conversations between the battle in ANH was brilliant. Really drove home the issues I had with RO, and why I gave zero shits about any of the characters or story when I left.

Well, that was kind of the point.

The story was about how the Rebel Alliance was able to obtain the Death Star plans. There was an overarching story about the Erso family and their dealings with Krennic. The Rebels were portrayed as not much different than the Empire in their methods, shading everything in the SW universe in gray.

The film also showed that nearly everyone involved with the Death Star project died due to that association. The Rogue One team, the Erso family, Krennic and shortly thereafter, Tarkin. That idea can be taken a step further in mentioning the Bothans, Vader and The Emperor in ROTJ.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't, I guess.

I had zero issues with setting up the film, characters and pacing. I felt like I knew enough about Jyn, Galen, Lyra, Krennic, K2S0 and Andor and further exposition would have been boring and unnecessary.

Jedha, to me, was awesome. Not only were Baze and Chirrut "Guardians of the Whills", they believed in The Force and lived on a planet that was a shrine to the Jedi before the Empire. What was really cool, IMO, was the inclusion of the Whills, the Bendu and "The Force of Others", all of which were grounded in the original Star Wars story developed by George Lucas.

Just got back from the movie and thought it was awesome. Loved the subject matter. Great idea to tell that story imo. I'm a huge star wars fan, but not terribly focused on the minutiae. I really have no complaints about the movie, and my kids who know very little about star wars still thought it was great.

I think the last two movies have done an exceptional job of scratching the itch for the casual Star Wars fan that grew up loving the original trilogy. I'm sure there are minor details that get missed and IMO it's probably not worth messing with a great story just to fill/avoid plot holes from movies created 30+ years ago.

I look forward to more Star Wars movies if they can keep hitting the mark like they did with these two.

Just got back from seeing this. Unbelievable! Loved it. My first thought is it's the best one yet. Might need some distance and time and a re-watch or two to confirm, but I was blown away. The final scene definitely had some extra emotional punch given the news today about Carrie Fisher.

You have two kinds of fans, you have the casual lover of the movies like me, and you have guys like Dane who talk about a bunch of stuff outside of the movies and somehow can tie all that in. I'm a simple fellow who loves the Star Wars he grew up with, but I never read any of the books, saw any of the cartoons or comic books or whatever. I just love Star Wars. So, I'm not really sure who these movies are supposed to be made for. I don't give a crap about anything outside the movies, so to me, TFA was fine, albeit a pretty obvious reboot. Rogue One was great, albeit a story that we really didn't need to see to add to the story of Star Wars. That's why its a stand alone story that simply took place in the Star Wars universe. I didn't mind that it had no crawl, cuz it's not Star Wars, it's a Star Wars story.

I thought it was great. Not a kids movie, some humor, a little slow to start, but ultimately a damn good time.

By the way, I like Red Letter Media's reviews a lot, but they got it wrong on this one on their show "Half in the Bag". Plinkett's reviews of the prequels are masterful.

He's right, it's better IMO. But, it's just a story in the universe. Hopefully Disney will really kick it in gear for Episode 8. TFA was great, necessary and did what it needed to do. Now it's time to move away from all the original stuff (besides Luke, on whom the story depends) and get interesting.

The direction is equal to TFA. The cinematography and visuals are superior in R1 vs. TFA.

TFA was well cast but IMO, R1 was even better cast. Each actor was phenomenal and believable. No eye rolling. Donnie Yen's character was the most enjoyable for me.

The story was predictable because, duh. The Easter Eggs were a blast.

The visuals, IMO, surpass any SW film ever and the final act is, by far IMO, the most intense and wonderful of any of the previous Star Wars film. I'll watch the final 10 minutes on a loop for days after it's released on Blu Ray.

It's every bit the equal of The Empire Strikes Back, IMO, without feeling derivative, which is what I disliked about TFA.

You said that originally not everyone died but the script changed. Why did they feel that they needed to kill everyone off?

Gary Whitta, the original screenwriter, and Gareth Edwards didn't think that Disney would go for and ending in which everyone died, so they wrote it as Jyn and Cassian surviving.

Once Iger and Horn saw the first cut, they gave them Carte Blanche to make the film that they wanted to make.
