Ed Harris is coming to series TV: The Abyss and Apollo 13 actor has signed on as the Big Bad in HBO’s Westworld reboot.
The four-time Oscar nominee’s character is called The Man in Black, and is described as “the distillation of pure villainy into one man.” He joins previously cast star — and fellow series television newcomer—Anthony Hopkins, along with Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, and Shannon Woodward.
The Warner Bros.-produced sci-fi pilot produced by J.J Abrams, Jerry Weintraub, and Bryan Burk updates Michael Crichton’s 1973 classic film about a theme park where androids fulfill dark human desires. Harris’ description might sound like he’s playing the Yul Brynner killer-cowboy robot role, but it seems like actor Rodrigo Santoro was tapped for that part—and online production rumors suggest The Man in Black is actually a human character who sadistically abuses the androids.
Harris will soon be seen the feature film Run All Night, starring opposite Liam Neeson and Joel Kinnaman. Harris won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy for his work in HBO’s Game Change. [Reply]

I think WW has a chance to surpass BG. WW only has the one season so far, so it's an early opinion and it's probably not fair for me to judge one against the other. [Reply]

BSG is one of my all time favorite shows. WW is an enjoyable distraction for me, but not in the same league. Just my opinion though. [Reply]

I think they have a chance of getting there. A real chance. And I absolutely loved that BSG reboot. The subject matter that they (WW) are playing with can get pretty deep, and they have shown that they won't shy away from it. [Reply]

See, that is my biggest complaint about WW and what keeps it from being next level. I feel like its themes have been done ad nauseum and I don’t really think it brings anything new to the table. I think it succeeds with its performances, and of course gratuitous Thandie Newton nudity, but I don’t really get a lot of depth from it. [Reply]

We'll see. I enjoy discussions about what sentience is, and I enjoy exploring the nature of consciousness. I also enjoy moral ambiguity in fictional characters. And I like watching a show in a format that allows mature themes. [Reply]
I'm torn. I have some kind of visceral dislike for non-humans "winning", not matter what. It's why I got only so far with the Planet of the Apes movies. The Apes WILL win (we know that), and I wasn't going to go too far down the road of watching how.
For that reason, and because i thought the first season of WW was really good and "complete" in many ways in and of itself, I ended season 1 thinking "that was GREAT, but I think I'm done here". I think I will wait and see what you guys think of season 2 before deciding for certain. I'll take the spoiler risk... [Reply]
