Media Center>Anyone build anything lately
Perineum Ripper 02:21 PM 09-05-2020
Since the world has been going to shit, thought I would see if anyone has built anything recently.

With the upcoming release of the 3000 GPUs, I might have to build one. Wife is also about to start a new business, and we will need a bigger better computer anyway.

:-)

That would be a problem since ethernet has a distance limitation of 100 meters (330 feet).

LOL, I could probably do 300 but still running a cable up to the loft when the ceiling is that high is a real problem...I need that in wall wired setup but of course...ain't happening.

How old is your electrical wiring?

Powerline adapters are always an option. Much better than wireless for sure.

Wait. What? Can you run a mesh system or access point system?

I tried those in my home and the best speed I could get was 5 megabits per second while hardwired devices were getting close to 500 mbps and nearly 400 for wireless.

Yeah, this is the way to go.

I'd recommend a Ubiquti Amplifi with either an AC Point or a Mesh System.

It really depends on your wiring. With his house being built in 1994, there's a decent chance they will work.

And given the way he's described his setup, he's not getting anywhere near 400Mbps wireless.

I guess it depends on what your are doing with your PC. If you're heavy gaming or transferring files, 100M ethernet would likely be superior even to 250Mbps of wireless throughput unless you're sitting in direct line of sight of the router.

Just saying.

My house was built in 1994 and it doesn't work well but that's probably because it's 4 stories and the room I tried was a long, long away from the Gigabit Switch.

From my understanding, they work better if the router/gigabit switch is on the same floor, and even better if there are visible sight-lines.

Ubiquiti is solid gear. Unify WiFi 6 is what I’ll look at next time I upgrade. I have ASUS Zen WiFi 6 tri-band mesh routers around the house now and it keeps me at 400-500 inside and 300 outdoors.
