Media Center>HBO series The Leftovers
Fire Me Boy! 06:59 AM 06-06-2014
Two percent of the world's population disappears. Looks intriguing. Starts June 29.

Perhaps, but that was also pretty clear throughout the entirety of the show's run. The show was very literally about its characters grappling with the unanswerable questions that define our existence.

Dude, I understand your tantrum over LOST. I was one of the most vocal critics, and I have and will defend my criticism to anyone who asks.

But The Leftovers was and is something different. It didn't dangle intriguing mysteries for years with the promise of answers, only to switch gears at the end to argue that none of the shit you were watching for mattered.

At it's base, it's an intimately observed meditation on how contemporary society would realistically respond if the things we take as articles of faith began to manifest. That premise alone justifies the 3 seasons we got.

Plenty of us have personal, and interpersonal, battles over faith in seemingly supernatural events, be they historical or prophecies of the future. But mostly we think when we do or don't see it with our own eyes, things will fall into place and faith will become rational.

With 'the departure' that is the center of the narrative. As close to a fulfilling of prophecy we are ever likely to see comes to pass, but it offers no clarity, only more pain and more avenues for reinforcement or abandonment of faith. A sizeable sum of the world population simply disappears, but Jesus doesn't descend in a golden chariot to say 'see? Now does it make sense? Told ya!!'

Life goes on. Coincidences continue to accrue hidden meaning. Events continue to bewilder the rational mind. But still, no one's hand gets held and no universal truth is revealed.

We still have to find our own meaning, and forge our own connections, and decide whether to live and why to live and what to do with our lives.

Love or hate LOST, Lindelhof found the perfect vehicle to exorcise the demons unleashed with the LOST switcheroo, because the mere act of trying to read too much into a visual or a narrative inconsistency is falling to the same traps that derail many in the show. What happens and what meaning we attach to what happens are two fundamentally different things, and it's interesting to explore how we convince ourselves we are doing one or the other.

As I recall, LOST was overall excellent, and even the late twists didn't make me unhappy for watching through.

Spoiler!

The show was very engaging, and while there were many ways I'd have preferred things go, it was altogether still worthwhile for us.

Just finished binge watching over the past couple of weeks.

Absolutely outstanding. Probably a top 10 all timer
For me.

Although I liked the first two seasons overall better than the last one.

My personal theory is that Nora never went thru the portal thing.

But very glad she and Kevin reunited eventually.

Well done.

I recently watched all 3 seasons of this...probably about two months ago.

Man....at first I really didn't like it and was struggling with slogging through it. But at the same time I didn't have the desire to just stop. There's been plenty of shows I've started and gave up on and I didn't really get close to thinking about doing that with this one.

By the end of season 1, I was captivated. It was such a different kind of show than what I've watched in the past and it's hard to explain what "it" is that hooked me but it did. It was depressing, uplifting, thought provoking and just so strange all at the same time. I loved the character based episodes, specifically the ones with Matt and Nora.

And to the people who compared this with Lost and hate Lindelof, I get it. I was much younger when Lost was on and I did watch it only to eventually give up by season 4 or 5. It was an insanely frustrating show. This one never answered the question of what happened/where the 2% went but it didn't bother me in the least. Didn't seem like that was what the show was even about, which was ok in my book.

Two big thumbs up from me. So different from what I'd usually watch but captivating nonetheless.

Yep. It was amazing. So strange and out there, yet completely engrossing.

Justin Theorox was awesome. All the cast members were.

Yes you've sort of described my experience the first time watching S1 (at least the first half or so). It's a difficult watch in many ways, but I think having seen the series twice in full now there's an argument S1 is actually the best season of it (not that the two other seasons aren't also great). The show itself might actually be my favourite of all time.

Yea. I would say season 1 was the best, followed closely by season 2.

Season 3 was good, but IMO didn’t have the narrative drive as the other two.

I guess they kept whittling the cast down because of budget reasons too.

I just watched the series too and thought it was phenomenal. The show really took off for me once they started going in completely unexpected directions. Felt like the viewer just had to let go of any notion of traditional narrative and enjoy all the strange places the show was exploring. Between this and Watchmen, those who hold a grudge against Lindelof are really missing out.
