Nzoner's Game Room>Sammy Watkins will officially be back
carcosa 03:39 AM 04-03-2020

The Chiefs have reached an agreement with Sammy Watkins on a new 1-year deal that will pay him a base of $9m for 2020 with an incentive package that can reach $16m, a source tells me.

The move creates $5m in cap space for the Chiefs to operate this offseason.

I think this is nice!

Best way to do that is improve the offensive line - NONE of our RBs had holes or room to operate behind the line last year.

I mean....wasnt his option either restructuring or getting cut? We were never going to bring him back at the contract he already had, so it was either this or nothing.

Not sure how that's an example of being a team player.

Because of how odd this offseason is bound to be the Chiefs are standing pat and trying to retain that team for another year, it's not a bad strategy.

With the way this offseason is going to go; no OTAs potentially a shortened training camp who knows really), keeping the majority of the team together is a big win for this season. Sammy sees some continuity and we don't have to get another receiver up to snuff.

That was some nice news to wake up to this morning

It was before the new deal. They haven't updated yet, Brosef.

I still think we take a WR in the draft. Watkins and DRob are only here for one year deals

It's impossible for a base salary $9m to count for $16m against the cap.

Wow, Negrodamus, amazing foresight.

No, seriously, with Mahomes we may actually take a WR in every single draft.

Keep doubting Sammy fucking Watkins.

When DRob was dropping passes. Watkins was balling the fuck out in the playoffs.

Would have liked to not resign DRob and draft a WR in this draft which is said to be the one of the deepest drafts at WR ever.

Still owed the $7 million from the original signing bonus that is/was dead money, no?

The deal is in 2018 Sammy signed a contract that included a 21 million dollar signing bonus. That signing bonus for cap purposes is spread out over the 3 years of the contract so 7 million each year. The 7 million prorated for 2020 does not go away with the current restructure. For cap purposes it is added to the 9 in base salary. Prior to this he was scheduled to be a 21 million cap hit (14 base + 7 prorated signing bonus)

I think the writing was on the wall, He wasn't going to make out on the open market. That market is a little dry.
