I *hope* it's a period piece because there's not much interesting about a crime movie set in modern Los Angeles although if anyone can pull it off, it would be the Coen's.
I would guess a period piece going by the Coens filmography.

From the people who brought us Miller's Crossing. Definitely works for me.

I would greatly prefer a period piece.
Los Angeles is undergoing so much gentrification that's it's just not interesting at this point in time in term of architecture and style, mainly because high rises and modern condos are going up right next to run down apartment buildings from the 20's and 30's, with road construction and construction in general going on everywhere.
Give me true Los Angeles noir, like LA Confidential, not an episode of Lethal Weapon on Fox.
