Nearly 80% hospitalized for COVID-19 were overweight or obese

About 78% of people who were hospitalized, placed on a ventilator or died from COVID-19 were overweight or obese, a new report from the CDC shows.

Why it matters: The findings show risk of severe COVID-19 illness rises sharply with elevated body mass index, especially for people younger than 65.

And this:

Study: In U.S., Lockdowns Added 2 Pounds per Month

March 23, 2021 -- Americans gained nearly 2 pounds per month under COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders in 2020, according to a new study published Monday in JAMA Network Open.

Those who kept the same lockdown habits could have gained 20 pounds during the past year, the study authors said.

“We know that weight gain is a public health problem in the U.S. already, so anything making it worse is definitely concerning, and shelter-in-place orders are so ubiquitous that the sheer number of people affected by this makes it extremely relevant,” Gregory Marcus, MD, the senior author and a cardiologist at the University of California, San Francisco, told The New York Times.

That's fairly significant, considering that the the majority of the US population is overweight.

So your contention is that fat people are no worse off? I don't think a few lbs overweight moves the needle. But obese, and severely overweight people have weaker immune systems.

Ali Aminian, MD, Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic, has studied 363 COVID-19 patients, and some, had a past history of weight loss surgery, while others did not have surgery and had a BMI of 40 or more at the time they tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr. Aminian found that in patients with severe obesity, 42% required hospital admission after contracting COVID-19. However, in group of patients who had bariatric surgery before, only 18% required hospital admission after COVID-19.

I can tell you right now that the general population does not have 42% requiring hospitalization after Covid.

No - all i'm saying is: if 2/3 of the US population is statistically considered overweight, then it's no surprise that 80% of COVID-19 patients are overweight.

Wouldn't have guessed I'd be on the list in early April, but here we are. Scheduled for J&J next Friday. I'm kind of surprised how easy it was to get an appointment.

I got my second Pfizer shot last week because I work in "education and childcare". IE - I write programs to squeeze more money out of university donors.

In one week I can start licking handrails.

Second Moderna dose 24 hours ago and I feel fine. Mild arm soreness, a few aches and pains but not sure if that is new or normal stuff lol. My wife was in bed for a day and a half after her second Moderna shot but normal now.
