Just too much cap relief and draft capital to be gained from moving on as opposed to extending him.
The one thing he does at an elite level (and what will get him paid) is rushing the passer between the guards. But he can’t hold a double effectively against the run and now almost has to be played at DE in order to not be a liability in those instances.
That’s not a guy I’m super comfortable paying $19-20M + per year. And if his body starts breaking down? Shit....
I’d keep the other 3 you mentioned and try to find another body of two who can rush on the inside on those 3rd and longs, even if it’s a DE.
Love Jones, but he’s a 3-4 end.
If you sign Ogbah for 1/$3M, Pennel for less, and draft a DE, that’s a solid rotation.
Really need a stud LB to replace Hitchens. [Reply]

And given each player's potential contract figures, some of us probably want Pennel MORE than Jones, I imagine.
Pennel, Nnadi and Saunders are enough in the middle. Jones is just going to cost too much. [Reply]
Drafting Saunders and getting competent play out of him already as a raw rookie kinda puts the writing on the wall for me. And I know he’s NOT Chris Jones, don’t get me wrong. But having young cheap options on the interior like he and Nnadi that get the job done makes Jones more expendable.
I’d rather use that money on a shorter term deal for an upgrade at a spot such as CB, LB, OL... then make good use out of a pick or two that Jones brings back. [Reply]
It's a good sign for Veach. The future of the Chiefs is to sign an elite team on offense, rely on the draft to stack our defense. If we play our cards right we can continuously draft a replacement right when a young guy falls off a rookie contract. [Reply]
