Matheiu is probably coming back but not for too much longer, Thornhill is in a contract year and probably won’t be extended unless he takes a fair deal and Sorenson…well yeah.

Safety is an obvious need for us would really like to get a Jevon Holland if we can.

Who are the safeties to start scouting?

I'm actually starting a thread before long on the free agent market at safety. It's super good, and I'd be surprised if safety was a burning need for us in the draft outside of necessary depth drafting.

So, a basic rundown of the top candidates (there's like 30-some safeties who could ostensibly be drafted by someone, so I'm not covering everyone):

1st round talent

Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame (strong) -- best safety prospect since Eric Berry, maybe even moreso

Jacquan Brisker, Penn State (mostly free) -- well rounded plus-athlete can do it all with no weaknesses

possible 2nd day talent

Jalen Pitre, Baylor (strong) -- has the body of a free, but plays nuts-to-the-wall at strong very well

Daxton Hill, Michigan (free) -- brother plays for the Ravens, basically a Thornhill clone

Lewis Cine, Georgia (free) -- hyper-aggressive, versatile, needs some refinement in coverage

Kolby Harvell-Peel, Oklahoma State (strong) -- divisive prospect: fantastic athlete who plays very aggressively at the LOS but struggles a lot in coverage

possible midrounds talent

Bubba Bolden, Miami (free) -- character concern, but great athlete in coverage, will need some refinement

Leon O'Neal Jr., Texas A&M (strong) -- poor man's Mathieu: fantastic on-field general, plays violently downhill, lacks athleticism

Sterling Weatherford, Miami (OH) (strong, dime LB) -- basically Dan Sorensen: big hitter, special teams ace, suspect in coverage, clutch plays

Nick Cross, Maryland (free/strong/dime LB) -- has the athleticism and potential to play all these positions, but will need development

Reed Blankenship, Middle Tennessee (everywhere) -- superb playmaker, but suffers from hyperaggression (basically Johnathan Abram)

Verone McKinley III, Oregon (free) -- exclusively a good-ball-skills deep safety

Damarri Mathis, Pittsburgh (free) -- corner-projected-safety known for tough coverage and zone mastery

Markquese Bell, Florida A&M (strong) -- character concern here, but a violent run defender with good coverage skills

Kerby Joseph, Illinois (free) -- one season wonder with great ballskills but will need development

There's a ton of them but if I had to pick my crush it's Jalen Pitre from Baylor in round 2.

My dreamy scenario right now is getting WR DJ Chark and DE Rasheem Green in FA then adding a DE Cameron Thomas in 1, SS Jalen Pitre in 2, and CB Coby Bryant and WR Velus Jones, Jr in 3.

For me, the FA S class is so strong, that’s a smart place to make an investment.

I’m good with the idea of drafting a safety in this one, but DE and WR are higher priorities for me.
