Nzoner's Game Room>Sammy Watkins will officially be back
carcosa 03:39 AM 04-03-2020

The Chiefs have reached an agreement with Sammy Watkins on a new 1-year deal that will pay him a base of $9m for 2020 with an incentive package that can reach $16m, a source tells me.

The move creates $5m in cap space for the Chiefs to operate this offseason.

I think this is nice!

Veach will go down as one of the best GMs of all time. Dude is playing it so so smart tbh. All of the signings are one year deal cuz he knows the cap space will skyrocket next year and he will have money for Jones and Mahomes

And teams can obviously afford to shell out 100k per catch or 3mil per td or they wouldn't have offered the contract.

Veach is thinking that the virus is killing ota's so we may as well keep contunuity.

Spotrac has updated to the same figure. 1 mil roster bonus but only 14 likely to be earned so 875,000 cap hit. Extra mil in guaranteed bringing total up to 8 mil this year (7 has already been paid). And 9 mil base salary.

Just saying it's a crazy amount when you break it down with stats. J. Russell got over 1 mil per completion in his short shitty career.

Even without the uncertain offseason, I'd say keeping continuity for a Super Bowl champion and a historically great offense is a good thing.

Why does Watkins cost 15.875 against the cap? Thought it was only 9

You don’t get rid of his bonus that he was getting this year. They just lowered his base salary and gave him some incentives to hit.

He did cost 21M

It's a base of 9 PLUS a bunch of incentives, that are likely to be achieved so they count towards the cap.

No. It's not. I was wrong at first. They didnt do anything with the 7 mil in guaranteed from the previous deal so hes getting 9 mil of cap hit on top of the 7 mil. The incentives are a way for him to make up the difference and would be on top of the 16 mil.

An interesting long-term element of this Sammy Watkins deal: it's ANOTHER one-year deal for the Chiefs. They're up against it this year, no doubt, but money is going to be falling off the books in 2021 and beyond, giving them a lot of flexibility for Mahomes and Jones.

Yeah I wouldn’t be mad at all paying for those incentives...and neither would you.
If he hits those incentives he will be worth every penny. Given his injury history and the other offensive weapons on the team that is doubtful. Seems like a really well structured contract.

Finally a bit of good news.

In 2021 the Chiefs will be returning Watkins, Pennel, Damien Wilson, and Robinson. Chris Jones is on the tag, so even if they don't get an extension or a trade deal done, they'll have him for 2021. And it sounds like they fully intend to find a way to keep Bashaud Breeland.

If somebody during the 2020 season told you this would be how the Chiefs offseason would go, would you have believed them?

Do you have your years mixed up? Because all the players you just mentioned are signed for 2020, not 2021. Unless you're going off the belief that 2020 won't be played?
