Nzoner's Game Room>My Struggles - Alcohol - and my plan.
Simply Red 02:58 PM 08-20-2019
Guys,

I have to confess, I'm a huge alcoholic and always have been, I've been sober in increments of 5 years and one other time for ten years. I recently reflected on how much I have been/was consuming. I'm completely through this time. I just can't do it anymore. I'll be honest - after this last time, I'm lucky to even be here right now.

I love you guys and promise to each of you, this is the new beginning to my life and I'm completely done with drinking.

Thanks for the ear. If anyone else is struggling. Please feel free to chime in if you wish.

Thanks for being my friend you guys

I have a friend who was in the same situation. He's been sober, now, for twenty years and recently commented about how grateful he is to be sober. He's enjoying family and life.

You can do this. Hopefully, you have a nonjudgmental support group you can lean on and who will lovingly hold you accountable.

Congratulations on your decision. I'm rooting for you!

I highly recommend attending AA. It's good that you can talk to us about it, and, of course, we all wish you luck, but it's going to take people who are real to you to help hold you accountable, and they'll have a firsthand understanding of what you're going through each step of the way. We can offer encouragement, but they can offer advice worth taking and support.

One day, one hour, one minute, one second at a time. When you want to drink, write down when, why and where you are. Find an new interest, volunteer yourself to helping others. Finding something to fill the void left by the habit of drinking will really help.

Good habits are hard to make and bad habits are hard to break.

You can do it, lean on family and friends when you need it.

Didn't drink any alcohol the night before last and I was awake all night. Even took sleeping pills but was wide awake until I had to go to work again. Can't seem to sleep without the drink, that's the shittiest thing for me.
Insomnia, Anxiety etc is a symptom of alcohol withdraw, as long as you aren't having Delirium Tremens (shakes, hallucinations), it will pass fairly quickly (within a few days) and you will get the best sleep you have ever had in your life. If you do get the DT's, you need to check in to a hospital ASAP, it can be fatal.

Alcohol actually disrupts your sleep pattern. When you are off of it, you sleep much better.

And a pro tip for all ya'll trying to quit or cut back...

Sparkling water is a great beer substitute...

Another thing, you will start craving sweets most likely when you give up alcohol, it's your body wants that sugar. Try to avoid the bad stuff like donuts and cupcakes, and eat fruit instead.

Praying for you brother and I'm right there with you as I'm a little over 6 months in(to be fair I did have 2 beers before dinner at the casino a few weeks ago but shut it down after that) so 2 beers in a little over 6 months.

IMO it's as much of a spiritual battle as it is anything so as a few others have mentioned I'd take it to God.For me personally I get up each morning and read a bit of his Word with my morning coffee to start my day.

Love ya man and so does He,fight the good fight!

Long story short I have 7 blockages in my arteries...40% up to the two 70% and one 75% I am too far gone to be eligible for stints. IF I don't reverse the blockage, the only way is bypass. Eating bad, smoking and drinking like a fish all contributed to this.

I haven't smoked since the 3rd, nor drank. I am on a heart healthy diet. You are making a great decision unless you want to be 58, in a hospital for 7 days and wondering if you're gonna have to have your chest opened. I am dealing with withdrawal of nicotine AND alcohol. But I sure don't want my chest cracked open.

When they asked me how much I drank, I said, "About a gallon a week." Of what they asked. "Tequila".

Let's you and me live a lot longer and fight the good fight. I am here if you want an ear. I will be going through the same things you will. Hell, I already am. But let's do it and live a lot longer!
Added to my prayer list brother, good luck with everything, you CAN do it!
