I feel like we are not getting better. Hope I'm wrong though. I honestly thought Houston was tradeable and am shocked at what we got for Ford.
As of right now, this defense is hot garbage.
:-) @ people thinking you got better by dumping the only two players that did anything worth a shit last year.
But... I don't know. We only have two defensive lineman who are capable of playing in this scheme in Jones and Nnadi, with questions around Xavier Williams and Breeland Speaks. We have two -- count them, THREE -- linebackers who can play in this scheme and one of them is a guy named Damien Wilson.
We've got one corner on the roster who we know can play. The safety depth chart is looking damn good, but we've taken major steps back everywhere else.
I know a lot of cards have yet to fall, but I don't know if a team with a great passrush has ever willingly vivisected itself like we just did. [Reply]
Our offense lost it's starting center and its #4 and #5 wrs. No biggie, but we didn't get better.
On defense, the only good thing about our defense last year was our pass rush. We've lost both of our edge rushers, leaving us with only our interior pass rusher. We've improved dramatically at Free Safety.
No pass rush means our shitty secondary will have to cover a lot longer.
Hopefully we have made a dramatic improvements in our defensive coaching staff.
Veach better draft 2 or 3 starters for our defense this year. [Reply]

Incredible.
Our pass rush was the only thing worth a damn on defense and we just dumped 2 of our 3 pass rushers. Both edge rushers are gone. Chris Jones is going to get doubled on every play, probably with a RB looking at him too. [Reply]
We will certainly not be as good at rushing the passer, but that certainly didn’t help get many stops against the Rams, Pats, Seahawks, Pats.
Hopefully Spags’ scheme and new personnel can at least get help our run D and take some of the short and intermediate routes away. If we do that, we’ll be better on D. As for the pass rush, I know this will sound like blasphemy but I think pass rush is over valued when your D is as bad as ours was and when playing good QB’s because they can get rid of the ball so fast. I think back to our losses and we barely touched the QB.
Offensively we were never going to be able to pay Morse. That was a given. I do like the Hyde signing. [Reply]

Are you predicting that they'll fall all the way to 32nd (from 31st) next year? [Reply]
Right now the D is worse....simply because there's no pass rush...and that was the ONLY thing the Chiefs were good at. Honey Badger isn't going to fix the Chiefs D problems. [Reply]
Neutral. I believe the D will get better w time but I dont believe this will be the year the D makes any huge improvements. That said w our offense as long as D improves a little we should be fine.
Chiefs have a new DC and a new defensive scheme. Spags obviously wants to get the players that fit his scheme and Ford unfortunately doesnt fit so the Chiefs traded him.
It is a transition year on D. There will be some growing pains. That's what happens when you dont have a lot of talent on D and you switch schemes. [Reply]
As of right now, the defense is worse, and its going to be pretty scary going into next season with 0 proven edge rushers on the roster. We essentially traded houston for honey badger, and traded ford for a pick next year. I agree with the Ford trade, I would have been extremely hesitant to sign him long term and they got decent value for him. Hopefully they can sign 2-3 more decent players on defense.
They could easily turn it around with a few bargain deals, but I have yet to see veach make any bargain deals. If we could get maybe clay Matthews pretty cheap, then we would have essentially traded Houston for Matthews and honey badger which would have be an improvement.
If we can sign another elite player or, two solid players for ford, and the second rounder we got for him, then that would be a win as well. They created a masonry need for an edge rusher and hopefully they don’t feel that pressure and overpay, or overdraft someone. [Reply]

You guys keep saying this as if we're only going to have 9 guys on defense...
I just fail to understand the hate of a newly crafted 43 defense.
Houston was and always will be one of my favorite Chiefs
Ford was a specialist (and a damn good good one)
They're gone.
It sucks but it's the cost of transition...
The defense performs as a unit; it does not perform based on individual accomplishments
Everyone take a breath and wait to see how the UNIT comes together [Reply]

Exactly.
The reason the 2018 defense was so bad despite those individual accomplishments is because they RARELY played as a unit. Discipline and teamwork are necessary elements. Raw talent alone is how you lead the league in sacks and still have one of the worst defenses in the league. [Reply]
