Nzoner's Game Room>I'm retiring due to health reasons. AMA
BigRedChief 07:30 AM 04-15-2024
I have short term memory loss. The doctors can’t seem to find the root cause. This isn’t some forgetfulness, it’s serious. They tell me I have about 10 years before I will lose all short-term memory. I will retain all long-term memories. So that post you make about me in 2006 is still going to be up there in my noggin.

I have previously shared this diagnosis with the mods. I asked them to keep this information confined to the mod lounge. Which they did and I appreciated their consideration. They encouraged me to share this information with the rest of the Planet. It’s time to come clean.

I also have CLL (Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia). Its only put me in the hospital once and it usually does not kill people these days.

Would not be a BRC post without bragging so…. Last 10 years of my career, I architected, designed, and implemented the first cloud at Bank of America, the largest private cloud in the world for the military and for IBM, the world’s largest serverless IT infrastructure services provider with thousands of enterprise customers, thousands of applications in more than 60 countries.

You cannot do that kind of work without a functioning short-term memory, so I have no choice but to retire.

I’m 65. I’m being forced to retire a little early but only losing a couple of years anyway. I’ll have a comfortable retirement alongside my wife of 34 years.

yeah too bad my skill set didn’t match your companies needs at the time. I think we could have worked together and kicked some ass.

Luckily for me, my wife is petite and looks much younger than her real age.
I can’t handle petite. I could trip and fall on a petite women and she’s in an ambulance with cracked ribs or something. Hurts for weeks. Pissed at me. :-)

I'm sorry to hear that, but congrats on your retirement. Sounds like you've definitely earned it.

Will you still be involved with the Chiefs chapter events?

yeah, I’m still involved but as a “founder”. I’ve set up a leadership crew to run things at the national level and internationally. We are making a big push into England and Europe next year.

I got this thing going but that crew knows way more than I ever did. Big ideas and skills to pull it off. It’s in good hands. I’ll just be one of the ones partying on game day.

I don’t know if I’d rather have short term or memory term loss. You now can’t make any new memories, and anyone you meet would have to always be reintroduced and explained to you.

Believe it or not....I got a pair of plaid shorts, white Sox and sandals as a gag gift at my retirement party. It also came with some other gag gifts meant to remind me I was an old geezer now.

All in fun...and all funny.😁

Wow a retirement party! I haven't heard of those in 20 years. Especially for those of us in IT.

Good for you.

I've never saw, heard of or attended a retirement party for an I.T. guy. Military retirements, sure. I got invited to a military veteran retirement party after work on a Friday. I was the only "civilian" invited, Holy shit those guys can drink.

Shots every time I turned around. Was a fantastic evening. Heard all kinds of shit your pants battles and coming out okay stories. I'll be forever grateful that I was able to hang with some badass heroes. If only for a few hours in a social event.

Its at this point just some forgetfulness, Left some water running, forget to do a task etc. But, I know its not the routine shit we forget all the time. I have good healthcare so if someone can find out how to stop the loss or root cause, I'll be able to find them.
