Star Trek: The Next Generation Reboot With Patrick Stewart Reportedly in Development

Rumors of the Picard-centric reboot come amid Alex Kurtzman extending his CBS contract for a planned expansion of the Star Trek TV universe.

According to a THR article, there are unconfirmed rumors that CBS TV Studios is developing a Star Trek reboot starring Patrick Stewart in which he would reprise his The Next Generation role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. According to THR's sources, Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman are attached to the potential reboot. Not only is this an unconfirmed project, but THR's sources also say that the deal is far from complete and might not happen. Still, this would be huge news for Star Trek fandom—however you might feel about a Picard-centric reboot.

The rumors of the Picard reboot come amidst Kurtzman renewing his overall deal with CBS Television Studios, extending his contract by five years. This will keep him in partnership with the studio through 2023, for a reported $5 million per year.

Kurtzman was recently made sole showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery following the dismissal of previous co-showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg who left amidst reports of bullying behavior in the writers room. Goldsman, who served as an executive producer on Season 1 of Discovery, also left the show, reportedly due to a clash with the writing staff in terms of management style and personality, so it's interesting that he is still attached to the potential Picard-centric reboot.

In addition to his work on Star Trek: Discovery, Kurtzman's extended deal with CBS Television Studios will include an expansion of the Star Trek franchise on the small screen, including the development of new series, miniseries, and other content, including animation.

While this generally seems like good news for the Star Trek universe, it may also be disappointing, depending on what kind of Star Trek fan you are. While the move represents a reinvestment in the Star Trek TV universe, Kurtzman is not known for critical success. Previously, he has co-written the scripts for Transformers, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. More recently, he directed and co-wrote The Mummy. Not exactly the kind of nuanced science fiction writing Star Trek has, at its best, historically represented.

More news on the expanded Star Trek TV universe as we hear it.

Really enjoying this season so far. And yes, it’s basically The Voyage Home at this point but I have no issues with that.

Not trying to hide it either. A reworked and remake of Star Trek IV works for me. One of the best ever in the Trek movies. Throw in Q, time travel and a more dangerous Borg, It's been a fun watch so far.

Through the first four episodes of the first season. I'm really enjoying it so far. Thanks for the recommendation, Bowser.

Once Ron Moore and Michael Piller took over TNG became one of the best television shows ever. Picard is long on visual style and short on good writing IMO.

Fun? A bit. Having everything so predictable has dampened a lot of the fun for me.

Enjoying mostly from a nostalgia point right now.

Star Trek IV is not a Star Trek movie. It's basically the cast of Star Trek vacationing in San Francisco. Sure, it has some funny moments and witty, light-hearted banter, but here's what it doesn't have - a villain, space battles, or (outside of the last 30 seconds or so) THE ENTERPRISE. If these clowns are going to steal a story to mimic, this is pretty much the last one I'd like to see. Has Scrunchy Face Murder Girl started looking for nuclear wessels yet? Ugh. :-)

Nah, they have the rogueish captain filling that role.

There's nothing wrong with Star Trek IV.

But so far we have:

1. A member of the crew suffering a head injury and ending up in the hospital, pursued by law enforcement.

2. A power drain on the ship that got them into the past.

3. The crew looking for someone or something special that can only be found in the past.

4. An environmental crisis.

This is hitting pretty close to the mark for a ripoff. They better deviate here pretty quick or I'm going to get bored.

Glad you're into it, I've been enjoying it so far myself. It's been a fun nostalgic ride, and I smiled the first time Q said Mon Capitaine.

As has been said, it's absolutely nothing new to this point. I chuckled watching Chris at the clinic as they threw in some social commentary about hunting illegals in for good measure. I was waiting for him to make a comment about the medical procedures and/or policing efforts to be out of the stone ages, lol. I also chuckled when their light cruiser was able to take out three Confederation battle cruisers with a single torpedo each, even if they were Borg enhanced. Reminded me of Chris Pine's Kirk in the Kelvin timeline beating the Kobayashi Maru test, but that's picking nits. Kinda.

If you've watched the teaser trailer for the show, you've probably already figured out who the Watcher is.

Just a reminder: I'm only four episodes into the first season. But know I guess I know that Q's going to show up! Didn't read the rest.

If any of you had just watched the pile of garbage that is Discovery S4, you wouldn’t be complaining about a Voyage Home ripoff. Picard is gold standard Trek compared to that shit. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a full season of television as bad as that.
