Mint Julep Ingredients

Wondering what’s in a mint julep? These are the ingredients you’ll need to make this top-rated mint julep recipe:
  • Water and sugar: The homemade simple syrup starts with equal parts water and white sugar.
  • Mint: You’ll need roughly chopped fresh mint leaves to flavor the simple syrup and eight fresh mint sprigs to garnish.
  • Ice: Mint juleps are traditionally served over ice. Crushed ice is best, but ice cubes will work.
  • Bourbon: Try to use a Kentucky bourbon, such as Maker’s Mark.
How to Make a Mint Julep

You’ll find the full, step-by-step recipe below — but here’s a brief overview of what you can expect when you make this homemade mint julep:
  1. Make the simple syrup with water, sugar, and mint.
  2. Fill the glasses with ice, then pour bourbon and mint syrup into each cup.
  3. Garnish with mint sprigs.
How to Serve Mint Juleps

Mint juleps are traditionally served in silver goblets or highball glasses.
I'll take one, please.

No ice.
Or water.

Or mint.

I had a couple mint juleps at the Derby many moons ago. Woodford was the sponsored "house bourbon"

Agree. I find mint revolting. I most commonly encounter it when someone is chewing gum or sucking on a mint. Thanks for the reminder that molecules that were in your mouth 10 seconds ago are now in my nose.

I'm going longshot Society Man. He's the only horse in the field that's a good mudder.

Exactly. Sounds like a good way to ruin whiskey if you ask me.

Sierra Leone has finished in the top two twice on a muddy track. I don't care for the #2 post position, and you're gonna get really short odds, but he's the pick today.

I'll probably throw Mystik Dan and Just Steel in and box a (2-3-6) trifecta with the three.

I don't follow horse racing however the losers are the people who think they know how to beat the system. The winners are the people who own the horses and run the books.

The real winner is the horse that is put out to stud while the loser ends up making glue and hamburgers.
