Could he be worse than what we're getting on the other side from Peters? It's abysmal. Acker looked like Helen Keller today.

DJ needs to get dropped into a specialist role. KPL and Ragland will get better. They're fast enough to make the plays that need to be made.

Hali should only get better with another week off, and maybe Dee Ford can return at some point to bring some speed from the outside.

I don't know that it would fix everything, but it's something.
It starts with the team admitting it has a problem.

I thought it was funny as hell the first 2 plays Hali is back and he gets held. They let the first one go and called the 2nd one. Then it seemed like it was immediately back to Zombo for most of the game.

One thing to keep in mind with Murray, him playing safety in itself is a project. He was primarily a CB at Minnesota and the Chiefs liked his size and physical style enough to try to fit him at safety. Maybe it just won't work out. And maybe CB would be an idea for him to try out again at the NFL level. I know Acker isn't a #2 CB in this league, so no idea why Sutton is wasting time with that garbage. Mitchell really has not been that bad if you take away the penalties.

Mitchell at least makes a play every once in a while. Acker is just...not gonna work.

There is no way in hell that Reid fires Sutton. He will be loyal to him until the end...in 5 years.

Sutton needs to go but the entire defense needs revamped. I'd go back to the 4-3 personally. They need 3 starting LB's regardless next year. The line may be better suited for the 4-3 anyway. Houston could probably play the RDE just fine. Bailey and KPass could be studs at LDE. Jones could be a beast at DT or DE.

I don't have a gif or screenshot of that alignment, but Sutton had 3 down linemen, and NOBODY ELSE within 10 yards of the LOS. Nobody in the middle. Nobody in a single receiver's face. All of them were allowed free releases to run the designed planned play.

Basically, Sutton took 3rd and 15 at the opponent's own ass end of the field and treated it like the opponent was at midfield with 1 second before the end of the 2nd quarter.

I know that's one play. It's just one play. And he's successfully called hundreds of brilliant coverages and concepts in key situations throughout his career that my puny football brain will never even approach within 10% of fully understanding.

But ****, man. That was the most egregious and appalling shit I've seen from a Chiefs defensive coordinator in ****ing YEARS. You actually have to go back to Greg Robinson. Yes, Greg Robinson. You can skip over Gunther Cunningham and Clancy Pendergast.

That single play was Dee Ford running away from ****ing Frank Gore. Not indicative of the job he's done and will do in the NFL. But still... it's so so so so bad that anybody with eyes would entertain the thought that Bob Sutton is a real problem with this team and he needs to be replaced.

And at least Dee Ford was a rookie. Capable of changing and growing, no matter how far he had to go. Bob Sutton is an old man who has always struggled at innovating and being one step ahead of the offense.
I don't agree that Sutton has struggled to innovate. I think our defense was a brilliant adjustment to the Brees, Brady, Peyton world of spread horizontal quick offenses. And we've made subtle adjustments throughout the years and Dorsey has publicly spoken about them. Moving from 2-gap (Devito/Jackson) to pass rushing DL. Trying to get more speed on the edges. Within the Dime, I think we've been plenty innovative.

But right now, we're kind of in this spiral where nothing is working I don't know if the league is changing and the Dime has become obsolete or if we just don't have the personnel to run that kind of Dime. Either way, we're hitting all the wrong buttons. I think a midseason DC maybe takes the brain farts out of the equation. But I don't think any midseason DC is going to turn the defense around. Sutton has had several major funks before. The Marcus Cooper era. The Jamel Fleming era. Even last year pre-Terrance Mitchell. And we've gotten out of each of them. I guess I'm desperately clinging to the hope that he'll find a way out of this one too. I just don't see any better option. I don't think a midseason DC giving us small incremental improvement is nearly enough. We need a defensive turnaround.

Gary Gibbs would surely step in as DC if Sutton was to be fired, but I don't know what kind of difference it would make. And I don't think Andy Reid would fire one of his guys anyways.

Sutton's D is too reactive, just laze around and wait for the O to make a mistake. Yet when the O is begging to turn over the ball our DBs can't catch an INT to save their lives. Even one of those and we are looking at this D differently.

I think Sutton is gone at the end of the year.

Andy Reid dumped a long time friend in Juan Castillo when his Defense cratered in 2012. The only reason Sutton isn't packing his shit now is because the Chiefs are still on track to win the West. Doesn't want to rock the boat yet.

Suttons latest Defensive philosophy doesn't really even seem to mesh with what Andy prefers.

Basically, yeah. It's a gameplan that only Mangini could love.

I agree on Sutton. I really think the problems on defense are this:

1. Need better DBs. This team needs to add 2 corners in the offseason in some way. A free agent and a rookie is fine, but they need 2 and one has to be a guy that can start on the outside.

I'm so pissed off at Marcus Peters lack of tackling and unwilling attitude to do anything but try and get picks that I'd trade him as well, if I could, and add 3 corners. I'm not even kidding about that. It's one thing to get turnovers, but you have to cover and tackle as well and he's doing neither one of those well. He isn't sticking with receivers on anything to the middle of the field, he's losing his assignments, and he hasn't made a fucking tackle that you can even remotely call good. The kid needs to pull the head out of his ass or gtfo.

2. Need better DL. This defensive front cannot establish the LOS in their favor very regularly. OL are getting on linebackers too easily and there is no collapsing of the pocket by the DL. Chris Jones is ok in spurts, but it's clear the Chiefs need to get more athletic up front. Teams are going to continue to try to keep doing 3-step against KC until the DBs cover and the Dline collapses the pocket. There's no need in worrying about improving your pass rush from the OLB position if you're not going to get there anyhow.

3. Get a new DC. Need a coordinator that can make adjustments on the fly and uses his players to their strengths. You have press man corners playing deep off man that is better suited for quicker, more agile corners. You have elite pass rushers dropping into coverage. You have solid linebackers sitting the bench for sub-par safeties playing sub-packages too often. Fuck that. I'd prefer a switch to the 4-3, but either way this crap has to stop.

I am convinced that ILB is not near the biggest problem with this defense. Seeing Ragland and KPL out there gave me some hope for the future (if they re-sign KPL).

I actually liked KPL and Ragland when they were allowed to attack and want to see them get more opportunities. Can't disagree.

The 3-4 is fine, but we need a smart coach to run it.
