Seem like I'm about 23 years behind on this one?

(Jesus, 23 years?!)

Apparently not. Fox is in talks with Chris Carter to bring it back, including having David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise Scully and Mulder. Nothing creative yet, just seeing how schedules line up, but still...

Also having (unrelated of course) talks about bringing back Prison Break and running a Kiefer-free version of 24 (not sure how that would work; he was that snow).

If you followed the show in the early 90s online, you'll release that Carter has just done what he's always done: mirror the conspiracies people discuss on the internet. Tad O'Malley is basically an amalgamation of Alex Jones with I think a little of Clyde Lewis's apocalyptic craziness thrown in. The other night was basically jade helm/blue beam but instead of aliens (well, outside of the dna in skully) the perpetrated threat was biological.

The overarcing story of the show hasn't changed so much as the various shades of "truth" being told by the show's peanut gallery of deep throats to our protagonists' changing. The only reason we viewers think we know what we do is because we see Tad O'Malley and the Lone Gunmen, who aren't really connecting with anybody in that world, not on a meaningful scale (again, think Alex Jones versus CNN/FOXNEWS...) and we see what deep throat, mr. x, alex krycek, cancer man and others tell our heroes (and occasionally each other). The world of the x-files at large still doesn't have any idea what's going on, all they can do is panic and react.

Personally I'm glad they didn't stick strictly to the 90's mythology, not the least of which being because they never kept a consistent mythology in the 90s, either, not even in the initial seasons. And as we all know the real world has changed in some remarkable ways, and the show needed to reflect that.

JMO of course. ANd I didn't think everything was perfect. I thought the 6 episodes were too disconnected, and I don't think we saw enough of Mulder and Scully working together, especially during the last hour. Wish we'd have gotten 12 or 13 hours of it, I wish there'd been a little more exploration of today's world, the paranormal, and how our views of all of it have changed. (And how they haven't).

But I also thought it was some wonderful nostalgia and I can't wait for the next chapter.

The mythology did bounce back and forth, but it always had the hybrid angle as a spine at least. Stuff confirmed over the years by syndicate scenes among other things. Carter isn't bouncing around this time, he has essentially deleted major episodes from having ever existed. Great episodes, imho.

Anyway, I do agree it's great nostalgia, and would like it back. Even if it's just to enjoy a few MOTW episodes and allow young viewers to find the official show.

I think that Carter should have put the main conspiracy on the back burner for a while about half way through the original run. Maybe only have one or two episodes dealing with that story line per year until the final season. The black oil, super soldiers and other plots should never have been tied into the main conspiracy arc. They would have been done more effectively without the baggage of trying to tie them into the main conspiracy. Do your secondary alien stories in seasons 6, 7, and 8 and then come back to wrap up the main conspiracy in season 9.

Instead we had a jumbled up mess that made next to no sense. Now Carter wants to ignore all of that and start a new storyline with CSM as some sort of zombie Hitler bent on genocide.

And how shitty was it to end the season on a cliffhanger? As far as I know there was no guarantee that the series was going to get renewed - it that how you want to end things? That's the best you can do? The UFO should have been started pumping out "Don't Stop Belivin" right before the credits rolled. I can't wait for season 11 so we can get to see Mini Mulder and Agent Bitchstein take over.

They had two endings. When they saw the ratings for the first episodes, they chose the "To be continued" ending.

I don't know how Mennonite doesn't get how negotiations work. Or even what this first season was to accomplish. Mix of broad nostalgia and cliff hanger good.

Wise up Mennonite and stop being a prick about things. It was fantastic to see X-Files again.

I think that's a bit harsh. No matter what the goal was, it never should have treated important episodes from the first 5 seasons as having never existed. I'm all for it being back and connecting with a new audience, but it didn't have to pretend things didn't happen or poorly treat classic episodes.

All signs pointing to another season but it might be January 2018 before we see it.

I left after ep 3 of the return season.

And Gillian is like vitamin C for me. I can take two eps of her and even if my wife has strep I'm healthy enough to risk it.

I do want to feel like it's going somewhere though and not just selling cheap "member berries."

meh.. I'll take the cheap member berries. There's just not that much good stuff to compete with anyway.

New stuff has been entertaining enough... even if I don't remember every single detail of the main story-line. It's crazy to see all these people looking so much older through the years.. and then the realization kicks in that, well shit... I'm looking older too! :-)

... and yes, would still hit that Gillian bod... though probably not as effectively as I could have 20 years ago. :-)

The last two episodes were better than anything I remember from the first reboot season. Really looking forward to Wednesday's.

This week's episode was one of the best in the history of this show. Too bad Darin Morgan doesn't write all of these.

I was wondering if anyone else was impressed. So many references inside references inside references.

And I half expected Huskey's character to tie into his character on 'People of Earth.' [but did you notice that his FBI badge showed up in an episode earlier this season?]

Operation Soy Bomb conditioned astronauts to think they were chimpanzees!! :-)
NOBODY knows why we invaded Grenada, . . . and I WAS THERE!!

And somehow, this is the center of it all

As Catfish Hunter said 'The Reggie Bar, when you unwrap it IT TELLS YOU how good it is.'
