Nzoner's Game Room>Space Exploration megathread
DaFace 09:40 AM 06-01-2014
Since a number of cool things are happening in space exploration these days, we'll widen the scope of this thread a smidge. Conversation about all things space exploration are welcome, whether it be from NASA, SpaceX, ULA, Blue Origin, or anyone else. Chances are most of the discussion will still be about SpaceX since they love to make things public and fun, but nothing's off limits. I'll eventually get around to modifying the OP to include resources for other companies too, but in the meantime, feel free to post any cool stuff you run across.

Upper stage restart nominal, apogee raised to 7000 km. Will spend 5 hours getting zapped in Van Allen belts & then attempt final burn for Mars.

Do spaceships follow the same salvage laws as nautical ships? If I salvage the Tesla, can I keep it?

Yes, but you have to grab it while it's over Russia...

We needed a billionaire crazy enough to invest in it.

It seems like there's a tradeoff involved. To get them back, you have to lift some weight for the fuel and structures to land them. I wonder if some technology changed to make recovery the better cost option over disposal.

Also, I suspect that it took a different player in the market to think differently. We've always made them one-time pieces of equipment and there may not have been incentive to think differently up till now.
