Dane- I’ve got a frost free upright kenmore. Upright is so much easier to deal with than a chest freezer. I can see everything.

I have to agree with this as well. Given the choice upright vs chest, an upright is the direction to go.

I don't feel as though you can get as much in there

I would have rather had an upright but in these times you take what you can get

Unfortunately, I cannot find a reasonably priced frost free freezer in LA right now. There are some manual defrost models available but I really don't want to deal with that nonsense.

I'll just keep an eye on it every day, like I did for other items such as TP.

The reason I love our upright is because the chest freezer always accumulated tools and shit on top of it as it sits out in the shop.

Chest freezers can double as a work space

The benefits of chest versus upright is a chest freezer is most economical in terms of both real estate and energy use. Chest freezers with the door on top and frozen goods below and no other ingress/egress means that the cold doesn't escape, not even much with the door open, as cold falls and heat rises.

It's harder to navigate if you use it a lot, but the 'stock it and forget it' factor is substantial. . . .

Plus, as United points out, once full and closed, you can store stuff on it or use it as a table, without wasting energy or adding much in the way of wear and tear.
