Nzoner's Game Room>How cool is your cell phone setup and icons?
scho63 05:21 PM 04-17-2021
I've been told by all my much younger Amazon coworkers that I have the most awesome icons and cell phone setup they've ever seen.

What do you have on your cell phone?

I have an LG K92 5G.

My Apple 6+ is on an ATT network. A group of us share 45GB of high speed data.

And no I am not showing you my Pornhub icon. Get your own.

Of course, just giving you shit. Seriously though, the reason it eats through battery, is because it has a static refresh rate of 120Hz in the main display. The newer Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S21, the OnePlus 9, and a few others, have a variable refresh rate. The S21 is variable from 10Hz-120Hz. The OnePlus 9 is actually variable from 1Hz-120Hz. Pixel is like 60-90Hz. Meaning if you're just doing something really simple like typing a text message, the refresh rate is lowered down to 1-10Hz, because the screen isn't really doing anything that needs more than that. Once you start watching an HD video or gaming, the screen ups the refresh to ~120Hz because of the active video. No differently than how new gaming monitors use Freesync or Gsync.

I'd also venture to guess the next versions of iPhones/iPads will also have variable refresh like this. It provides for much better energy usage. Existing Apple devices tend to be much better at energy usage even with having smaller capacity batteries. But right now that's because even their best current iPhone only runs at 60Hz. Once they start increasing that for their screens, they'll have to beef up their batteries to compensate.

For reference, the current iPhone 12 Pro only has a 2,815 mAh. The OnePlus 9 has a 5,000mAh battery. The Galaxy S21 Ultra also has a 5,000 mAh battery. So there's a trade off. But like I said, once Apple jumps to 120Hz variable and a larger battery, it's going to immediately outlast the current comparable OnePlus and Samsung devices just because of the more efficient ARM processor.
