I'm sure that a few local theaters in the bigger cities will still offer an IMAX room, along with a few other larger rooms.

But the days of the 16-30 Multiplexes are nearing their end.

Making a movie using 70mm film is ridiculous in this day and age. The only reason guys like Nolan and Tarantino use it is because their heroes filmed their favorite movies on 70mm and the fact that they can, due to the enormous budgets given to their projects.

But just as some bands still claim to record to "tape", they're also recording every single track and overdub simultaneously to digital. This also occurs on these very same movie sets for instant playback so that the director can decide whether or not the shot works on the spot, as opposed to waiting until later that evening or the next day for the film to be processed and a screening room is available.

As for IMAX, who knows? It's a very costly process and at this point in time, only translates in IMAX theaters, so I'm guessing its usage will be far more limited than today.

This is true. Universal and all the studios have enough tent poles every year to keep the big screens and rooms busy. And Universal has made it clear they intend for those tentpoles to have nice long exclusive theatrical runs if they are delivering. What is going to drop off is the later weeks of the previous windows when the film shifts into the smaller rooms and theaters keep more of the ticket price. That is why all these deals have profit sharing built into the PVOD to make up for that difference.

Film festivals and other indie distributors have been doing this for years already effectively distributing straight to the home, and it works because they couldn't get space in the multiplex. This shift may get some films that may have never seen a theater outside of NY or LA the opportunity to go into some of those smaller screens before they start their PVOD run if the chains want to expand their offerings rather than shut rooms down. They can work out a profit share with the smaller distributor or film festival who can do more than before in a digital delivery mode. The possibilities are pretty great. It just may feel weird for a while if people don't go back to theaters soon.

Looks like we might have a normal movie summer after all this year.

Thoughts Dane?

Big news for LA moviegoers - movie theaters will be allowed to reopen as soon as this SAT, or shortly afterwards. Capacity limit of 25% just like NYC. Currently, 79% of North American #boxoffice is open for business and that figure will rise by early next week.

Only 10 million people have been vaccinated in California to date, leaving somewhere around 33 million unprotected.

If California can get to 25 million or so before July, it's possible that movie theaters will see some business this summer but I think there's a better than good chance that it's going to be September or October before we see any normal box office numbers.

That said, I do expect strong numbers during the holiday season in November and December.

Same.

But the whole day and date streaming/theaters thing could be here to stay? But who knows? I don’t think Disney or HBO have released the numbers on their first run streaming movies like Wonder Woman and Soul?

Disney hasn't released any numbers but I read a report that said Disney would need to sell 5 or 6 tickets at the movie theater in order to match the $29.99 they receive for Premiere Access films.

I purchased Raya & The Last Dragon Friday night because we would have gone to the theaters and spent $72 dollars plus at least $4 dollars parking on four tickets alone.

I think it works for films like Mulan and Raya but Disney stands to earn significantly more at the Box Office with Marvel and Star Wars films.

I would imagine that theaters in your area will open to much closer to full capacity long before they do in cities like Los Angeles due to the population density.

My entire family in the KC Metro area including my parents, aunts & uncles, cousins, brother and sister, along with of their kids and spouses, have already been vaccinated.

But in LA, I don't know of a single person, outside of nurses and doctors, that have been vaccinated yet. Only 10 million out of approximately 43 million have been vaccinated in California, so I'm just hoping to get the shot by August.
