The first of four major art projects for the new single terminal airport at KCI have been revealed.
More than 1,000 artists from around the world submitted inquiries after Kansas City announced an international search for artists.
The city said the four works of art were chosen because they either reflected the wonder of travel or Kansas City history.
The budget for artwork at KCI’s new terminal is $5.65 million. Kansas City’s single-terminal airport is expected to open on budget and on time in early 2023.
“The fact that we’ve been through a pandemic over the last year and yet this project remains on time, on schedule, and on budget is a testament to the good work of the team,” said Justin Meyer with the KC Aviation Department.
You can see the renderings of the art projects in the gallery below.
Entitled "Molten Swing"
Entitled "The Air up There"
Entitled "Ornithology"
Entitled "Fountain of Resonance"
"Molten Swing" looks kind of like a mosaic dog or cat to me, it might look cool though but not sure what to make of it at this point.
"The Air up There" simply looks like some lights on the ceiling, again it might look better when you're actually there I hope.
"Ornithology" reminds me of those attacking creatures in the Pitch Black movie. You just knew one of the artwork they chose would have a WTF moment and this is it.
"Fountain of Resonance" I approve of this one. :-)

I fly back tonight then I’ll be doing the same thing you are.
I may get there a little early tomorrow and try one of the other restaurants.
I ate at the city market coffee shop this morning. They clearly have some kinks to work out. Several of their options weren’t available and they were having trouble keeping up (there weren’t that many customers either). They’ll figure it out though. [Reply]
I might go up there after work and just hang out for 2 or 3 hours. Take the family and all that. Airports are very exciting places and I want to spice up my Tuesday! [Reply]
Flew out of the old terminal on 2/21, flew into the new terminal last night. Very new smelling. My wife flew in Saturday and about the only thing she noted, and I know they're working on it, is the traffic for pick-ups and drop-offs when our son picked her up. He picked me up last night and he used the cell phone lot very effectively and was driving up just as we were walking out of the doors after getting our bags.
I bet Frontier Airlines cut a deal on their concourse to have little tiny uncomfortable seats at the gate area that are really close together. And no food nearby. [Reply]

They'll get it figured out...
Funny how it seems like a whole lot of people haven't been to any other airport in the past 20 years other than the old KCI, so now it's chaos and hurt feelings since they're actually enforcing the rules. [Reply]

Just dont enforce dumb rules. The airport cop chick told my GF that "terrorists dont sleep" when she was on the curb waiting for me after 2 min. As a reaaon that she must move at 1am on a Monday. Super not busy. [Reply]

It has a Wendy's though, that goes pretty far [Reply]

Probably the same fat bubble butt black girl with a badge that was windmilling her arms at me. I rolled down the window and asked do I get to stop or does my wife have to jump and roll on the move. She did laugh after that one. [Reply]

Yeah, when my older son got married and we had to pick up some folks at the Knoxville airport they had that cell phone lot and it worked very well.
And the sooner they start handing out tickets for people parking their car and waiting, the sooner the problem will be solved. [Reply]

The backups are happening on the lower level. That's where you have the airport buses' lane baggage claim and pickup along with uber taxi and parking lot x-ing and entering. Poorly thought out. The upper level and lane to the dropoff area on the upper level is a piece of cake till you encounter all the Gestapo and their vehicles parked in the interior lane closest to the entry doors. [Reply]
