Nzoner's Game Room>50 Beers to Try Before You Die
NewChief 06:18 AM 04-24-2010
Thought the beer snobs here might like this article (and probably critique the hell out of it).

(CBS) You've heard of "100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall"?

How about 50 to try before you die?!
Spoiler!

Where? I need to try it on tap... didn't try it last year, then got one of the bad batches this year.

The Lauter Tun in Omaha has 1 keg of Chocolate Ale left... said they were going to tap it in the next few weeks.

It's very good for about 12-16 oz. But yeah, it's artificially created hype. Blvd has done a very good job marketing this product.

Bleachers at 150 & 291, near Rain Tree Lake.

BTW, their food sucks. My wife and I split a Sante Fe Chicken Wrap that was just plain nasty. Actually, it didn't taste nasty. It just had no flavor at all.

That's my #3 or 4 hole simply due to proximity. Their burgers and wings are pretty good. I've never strayed from either of those staples. You were in my neck of the woods. Holler at me if you get up there again and I'll join you for a beverage. Haven't seen either one of you in ages.

I don't think that Boulevard aggressively marketed Chocolate Ale at all.

Word of mouth did that. I never saw one thing from Boulevard, other than the press release that said they did 3.5x more than they did last year.

Not familiar with the first or last. Used to really enjoy Newcastle until I got into a skunked bottle once. Now I can't even enjoy a fresh one nor on tap.

Newcastle is just too sweet for me. If I'm going to drink a beer that sweet, it better have a pretty high ABV.

I heard from a guy at work that if you put a raw egg in a Newcastle the rest will taste even better.

I guess a lot of people do this trick, you can google it. I have yet to try it.

Boulevard mentioned that, too...

But the media is tough to control – the resulting stories about Chocolate Ale were influenced by last year’s surprising demand and the anticipated demand for this year, not by anything the brewery initiated. Prior to the release, we posted updates about the beer on our social media outlets as we normally do for any upcoming release. That was it—the least expensive, least strategic marketing plan ever conceived.

That's a form of marketing, though not in the traditional sense. It's even better than spending tens of thousands on traditional marketing because the public creates a sense of urgency.

It's pretty tough to pin that one on Boulevard as some form of shrewd guerrilla marketing tactic. They sell Chocolate Ale to distributors for a set price. The publically-created demand does no good for Boulevard from a monetary perspective. If anything, the buzz created just inflated the secondary market.

I also know someone that does marketing for Boulevard and she has told me several times that the MO for the Chocolate Ale was no different than any of the other limiteds they sell, eg. Imperial Stout, BBQ, or Rye on Rye.

It wasn't really planned. I had the pleasure of spending 3+ hours at LS West watching my sister's kid participate in the Missouri HS Dance Championships (all the while missing the end of the MU/KU game).

We just kind of ended up over there after they were done.

Just be glad you didn't go to Westside which is right down the street from West.
