It's most definitely a possibility But I have some degree of faith in the HBO writers. The series I've watched haven't gone off the rails. And they had to have had somewhat of a plot mapped out early on because they knew they were going to outrun the books.
Additionally the comments I've read on here about book 5 seem to indicate that Martin has kind of gone off the rails. I understand it can be a literary technique to engage the reader in a slog it out sort of manner but maybe the dude has lost it. It's a huge story and a lot can happen.
I would bet that nearly everyone that doesn't have a great deal of faith n HBO feels that way because of the Dorne plot last season.
They fucked that shit up so bad because HBO thought they'd get it done in 7 seasons. We could have had the Queen maker plot, Darkstar, Fire and Blood speech, etc. Instead we got Doran moping, 3 sand snakes that seemed wildly incompetent, and a dead Lannister with the Martell heir on the same ship. Yep. Better they left the Snakes out altogether than portray them how they did on the show. I literally laughed at them. It was pathetic. Doran? JFC. Non-readers can't know it but that show is NOTHING if/when it strays too far from the books. [Reply]
The show will be fine. Unless I missed something and he has literally no contact with the show anymore. I'd think just because it's not written down doesn't mean they can't talk about it. [Reply]
When the show has gone away from the books, there have been mixed results.
Good:
Brienne vs the Hound, that was an epic battle scene, I loved it!
Arya and Tywin together, I loved nearly all those scenes
Hardhome episode last season with the Night King staring Jon down at the end, that was a truly great episode
Bad:
Asha takes the Ironborn all the way to the Dreadfort to rescue Theon, and then turns around and runs away because of a few mean dogs? Just awful.
Sand Snakes and Dorne last season were lousy
Sansa marrying Ramsey and getting raped by him...still don't like that
Stannis burning Shireen (may happen in the books still, but I really don't think it will be Stannis' doing if it does, it will be his wife and Melisandre).
I guess at this point I'm resigned to watch and see what the show does with it understanding the books will be very different. I thought about not watching, but...I can't do that. I'm pretty sure I'll like some of it, and not like some of it, but I think I can enjoy it more now that I will have no idea when I watch it which part is following the books and which part isn't. Davos about to kill him some Nights Watchmen with Longclaw. Ghost is still alive in that scene, not so sure about Jon.
1:00 mark and 1:16 mark look like the Tower of Joy scene with a young Ned Stark and crew taking on the King's Guard.
1:18 mark looks like Arya is warging.
My favorite though has to be a stunned Bran turning around and seeing the Night King, can't wait to see what that's about! Bran visions this season are going to be awesome!
1:10 mark, Brienne vicioucly killing another dude, not sure who
What girl is Melisandre kissing?
Zombie Mountain about to kill himself some sparrows...adios Lancel! [Reply]

That Davos + Jon team-up is going to be awesome. [Reply]
Is there any doubt that Jon Snow is going to come back and go apeshit on the people that killed him? Hell, I wouldn't be too mad if he killed Oliver even though he is just a kid. [Reply]
Davos will probably handle all that before he's resurrected.. Actually, probably not since it'd create more tension for Jon to meet them all again. [Reply]

The bummer that I took from the trailer and
Spoiler!
the leaked videos was that it doesn't look like Arthur Dayne is going to have Dawn and instead has two swords. Weird if true.
Spoiler!
Kingsmoot at :44? Euron sightings at 1:09 and 1:15, Bolton shields at 1:14, Arthur Dayne at 1:16, Nghts King at 1:19
The dude with the two swords could be someone other than Dayne. He was in Targ gear not kingsguard attire. Not saying it isn't Dayne but that is a possibility. [Reply]
