Pretty alarmist, IMO, but possible.

Spoiler!

of course not.

An explanation of that is buried somewhere in this thread. More than once.

From below. I paid 3.59. Who knows what it was when they purchased it and put it in. But say it was whatever and they based it off of 3.59 for their margin of profit.

They raised it to what it is today, 3.89. They're making 30 cents more a gallon than their original profit margin.

Is it fair to be charging 4.59 by the time they need to fill the tanks again? No. That's price gouging on the base price they paid originally.
Yes, they paid for what is in the tanks, and what they paid for that was based on replacement cost. It's really just moving money around. There was someone here who explained it much better than I can. Bunnytrdr, I think.

Here you go:

A gasoline retailer typically seeks to establish a retail price based on the cost of replacing the gasoline currently at the retail location, not the cost of that product itself. Basing prices on "replacement costs" is especially critical when wholesale prices fluctuate frequently. A retailer must generate sufficient cash from its current retail sales to purchase its next delivery of gasoline; otherwise, the retailer would be constantly using debt to finance wholesale gasoline purchases.

Thanks. Somewhat understandable, but it's still bullshit.

I have the same, pulls my 5th wheel and such. Mrs. Monty made me get the High Country, I didn't resist much. It's a great truck, but will be parked for the majority of this summer until we head up to the Black Hills.

I paid $4.89 in California yesterday. Most stations are priced higher.

Us Californians have been paying 4-5$ for awhile now. The rest of the nation is catching up.

Because. Say they paid 3.49 a gallon for the tank. Their markup was say 10 cents a gallon. That's understandable. But to keep raising the price for what they may eventually pay is bullshit. They still paid 3.49 a gallon.

Do you think it's reasonable that they end up charging, say, 3.99 a gallon on what they paid 3.49 for? A 50 cent a gallon profit from the 10 they already were?

I don't.

Problem is, you have to live in the Midwest to take advantage of those things.

I'd be fine with it if they dropped them proportionally as the price of crude drops. But they don't.
