Nzoner's Game Room>UPDATE: Ford to 49ers for a 2020 2nd round pick. Official.
Dante84 06:19 PM 03-12-2019

More trade news: The #Chiefs are deep in talks with the #49ers on a trade for star pass-rusher Dee Ford, sources say. Things have escalated and this could get done by the end of the night. Ford needs to work out a new contract with SF, which is a big piece of this.

The trade is essentially agreed to — Ford for a 2020 2nd round pick. That assumes the #49ers get a deal done with Ford. https://t.co/g4tYK2tWFh

Wait! What? You were giving me shit, and have the same guys? I said no particular order? A case can be made that Kelce and Houston were just as valuable, if not more, than Ford.

The only thing I learned today is that I can no longer make fun of other fan bases for being stupid and generally ignorant of football.

They all signed within pennies of 14 mil a year. They were considered the top 3 safeties in FA. Obviously lesser safeties earn lesser money.
Dee Ford????? He had a great last year rushing the passer. BUT
40% of the time double digit sacks, 60% of the time less than 3/yr.
Has taken 5 years to become average, if that, at stopping the run.
For an OL/DE to command tag level money or more they better be above average in all phases, not just rushing the passer.
Pray tell what strawman argument I've made...

The rest of your post I have already responded to at some point in the thread sooooo...

You can’t compare a 34 yr old Weddle and what he got to a 26 year old Mathieu. There’s an 8 year difference in age. I truly think he’s better than you think he is. No he’s not Berry or Thomas in their prime nor will anyone confuse him with Lott or Reed but he’s still significantly better than the hot garbage we trotted out there last year.

Hard to compare the Brown and Watkins situation though. Brown wasn’t available for a trade last year. Watkins when healthy (big issues with that) makes our offense unstoppable. He’s not Brown, but he’s also not a middling receiver either.
That ain't hard, but that ain't necessarily worth $14MM per year either. And paying that amount we SHOULD be getting Berry or Thomas production...

The only I've learned today is, don't expect from Auburn what only Alabama can produce.

And bruh?

He gone.

Perhaps not, but he’s fetching the going rate for a high end safety. It would be nice to have Thomas or Berry production, but that’s easier said than done. I guess we will see if Thomas plays like the Thomas of old after this injury.

Second, $16MM for an elite pass rusher isn't overpaying... it's a fucking bargain.
Sammy Watkins, other than his 2016 season in Buffalo, has produced at a medium to high level EVERY OTHER SEASON of his career.

There's no comparison between him and Dee Ford. Zero.

And second, $16M for a player that is just as likely not to play as repeat 2018 is a waste of money, not a bargain.

When Sammy played, he impacted. Having him here after Hunt got axed was a godsend.

If the staff assembled is up to the task, it's the realization of what I've championed for a while.

At least as far back as CP goes, I've said there's no salary cap of trainers, facilities, or coaches.

The worry right now, is the snap judgements. It's a huge leap of faith to believe wholeheartedly that the new defensive staff has comprehensively assessed what we have/had AND what we can feasibly acquire in both free agency and the draft without error. And I'm not there yet trusting Veach and the Scouts on defensive assessment. AND I have no faith in Reid's defensive acumen.

Best case, we have a defensive staff that can coach a squad up right. But it's going to take time [and a few personnel stumbles] to get them there. And with the franchise QB here, and the mega contract clock ticking, time is our most fragile asset.

Dee Ford "needed" trade to 49ers, says AFC title game jabs will "fuel" him

If anyone needed a fresh start in 2019, it was Dee Ford.

Patriots fans will forever remember Ford as that guy who lined up offsides late in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship Game, keeping New England's hopes alive en route to an overtime win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

But the 27-year-old linebacker now is headed to San Francisco after the 49ers reportedly agreed to trade a 2020 second-round pick for Ford on Tuesday night. And he's apparently very excited about his change in scenery.

"They don't understand what they're about to get - I needed this, bro," Ford told Yahoo Sports' Terez Paylor on Tuesday night.

Ford has good reason to be happy: The Niners reportedly will give him a new five-year contract worth $87.5 million. That's a testament to his strong 2018 campaign in which he tallied a career-high 13 sacks while forcing seven fumbles.

Still, Ford is wary of the criticism that followed him prior to 2018, when some labeled the 23rd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft a "bust" due to some underwhelming campaigns in Kansas City.

"For so long, I've been fighting that narrative that I'm not that good, that I didn't qualify as [a good pick]," Ford told Paylor.

And yes, he still hears those who blame him for Kansas City's AFC Championship Game loss -- and apparently is using the haters as motivation in San Fran.

"Man, it's gonna fuel me like none other," Ford said of the criticism he faces.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, Ford's move to the NFC means they won't get to thank him again for that offside misstep. Maybe some other time.

He played well during a contract year and single handedly cost us the AFC Championship Game. He can go fuck himself. "Fuel Me" my ass. He just got a big paycheck. He's going to regress. Guaranteed.

Meh. He’s gone and I wanted to sell high. Disappointed in the trade but we still got a 2. He’s going to be 28 with injury concerns and a back problem. SF can play him that bag

This. I don’t care what kind of year he just had, I was incredibly leary about signing him long term. He seems to be a classic case for “not living up to his contract”.
