Nzoner's Game Room>****Official 2018 Missouri Tigers Football Thread****
'Hamas' Jenkins 05:36 PM 07-30-2018
The beginning of the 2018 season is a little under five weeks away. Missouri enters the year projected to finish 4th in the East, and may be a borderline Top 25 team according to some projection systems. After a disappointing recruiting cycle last year, pressure is on Odom to restock the cupboard after the senior years of Lock and Beckner, who will go down as two of the better Tigers in history and likely first round draft picks.

Schedule:

Spoiler!

Recruiting:

Spoiler!

At this point, the class is ranked 68-69 nationally by Rivals and 24/7. Odom is going to have to rely on Pinkel's diamond-in-the-rough approach. It looks like they've pulled back considerably from Georgia, focusing more upon Texas, which is what they should have always done. Unfortunately, they've done horrific in-state, and I think that will likely end up being the nail in Odom's coffin after the 2019 season.

12/19 Update: A strong finish late in the cycle moved the class up significantly. Securing commitments from grad transfer Kelly Bryant and TCU transfer Shawn Robinson has solidified the QB position in the short and intermediate term. A class that was ranked in the 60's at the beginning of the season is now a top 20-30 class factoring in transfers.

Hamas' Crystal Ball: 8-4; 4-4 in the SEC (wins vs. Ark, Tenn, Vandy, Kentucky)

Especially after yesterday, he'd have to be nuts to go to Arkansas.

Auburn is where I see him going...

I'd certainly like our chances better if we were the 10-2 that we should be and not the 8-4 that we are.

Record doesn’t matter

It’s all about selling

What was our recruiting ranking after 12-2 and 11-3?

Kentucky has outrecruited us for years because they have sellers, it didn’t matter that Mizzou had more on field success prior

Odom needs to sell Bryant on the strength of our lines and the quality of our skill players. Bryant would thrive at Mizzou

Can't argue with that. Definitely need some better salesmen in the house.

Maybe the new facilities will help some.

Mizzou should set 2010 as the goal for recruiting. It is attainable, but requires closers

It’s Missouri, Auburn, or Mississippi State.

Missouri is the best combination of returning talent and surety of being the starting QB.

Auburn has Stidham for him to contend with. Miss State has a young QB who is an even better fit for their offense than Bryant.

And honestly you could say that Stoops success recently has probably had something to do with Benny Snell being there.

It's the same knock they put on Malzahn at one point too...the Coach is only successful as the players they inherited.

Odom may not be "the guy" for Mizzou long term. But I will give him credit for his team not quitting after losing 4. (well really 2 considering what I outlined in my other post about the Kentucky game and the SC game).

They went into 2 tough places to win on the road (Florida and TN) and kicked their butts big time.
Re: Stoops. There's only 1 season that I think you can say he underachieved and it was 2015. That team should have gotten to 6 wins and a bowl but didn't. The obstacles faced by Stoops were much different than Odom. Stoops practically took over a FCS team with horrible facilities. Odom took over a team that had better facilities and had won the SEC East in 2014. Granted, recruiting fell of at the end of Pinkel's tenure, but still.

I guess the point I'm getting at is do you feel Odom is developing 3 star players and having them produce at a high level while occasionally landing a 4 or 5 star?

Kentucky's recruiting the shit out of Ohio and getting a few four stars here and there while also developing the **** out of 2 and 3 stars. Josh Allen was a 2 star who played WR and DE in HS and Snell was a 3 star.

Stoops' weak point with recruiting has been QB(he put everything into Barker and got bailed out by 2 JUCO QBs), similar to what seems like Odom's is.

Odom took over a nightmare situation.

The 2015 team had 0 playmakers and the bottom of the defense was about to fall out. Not to mention the protest and the narrative that Mizzou football “wouldn’t recover” posited by many Tennessee, Arkansas, and KSU fans (oh how sweet is those teams demise now?)

Odom took over a challenging situation because of the protests.

But to act as if that team was FCS level is wrong.

FCS?

Kentucky beat Mizzou decisively in 2015, 21-13

UK was already ahead of Mizzou when Odom was hired in 2016

I'm saying UK in 2012 was a FCS level team and Mizzou in 2015 was FBS quality. In 2015, UK had more talent than when Stoops took over.

I’m not sure about that

We had an FCS defense in 2016, and a Division 2 offense in 2015 for that matter

To the surprise of few, Njoku decommitted. Given that he's from NJ and his brother went to Miami, it always seemed unlikely that he'd stay.
