Tech wins on a walkoff 3 in overtime to beat WVU. What a night for KU basketball.

Defense is going to be an ongoing issue for this team in 2017.
To be fair, at least 2 of DJ Jackson's fouls were garbage.

I think everyone not on the roster at KU was thinking "ZOMG WTF is the white guy doing?" and didn't pay attention to the steps. :-)

No rim protection (which Udoka probably would have solved) is a big problem.
I have no problem with Mason's on the ball defense and defense over screens.

Your point on rim protection is absolutely correct. Jackson is tied with the most blocks on the team. With.......Udoka. Fuck. Lucas provides some rim protection that doesn't translate to blocks - he mostly just discourages shots, but pretty much every time he goes after a shot he fouls.

K-State still shot more FTs than KU.
KU was called for more fouls.
At home, at Allen Field House.

But the refs were atrocious on both sides. Calling touch fouls on both sides. Frank was getting mauled all night, no calls.

Best foul had to be when Mitch ran over some guy like a freight train, then looks around, gets free throws instead of a foul :-)

Mason and Graham are overrated defenders. There is only so much you can do when you are 5'10'' and 6'1''. Teams that could give us fits are teams with tall point guards (UCLA) and teams that have two grisly post guys (Purdue?)

We are going to absolutely beat the shit out of Iowa State this year, though. Going to get piss pounded @WVU, @Baylor, though.

If KU wins 1 of 4 of @WVU, @Baylor, @Tech, @K-State. I will be pleased.

I laughed hard, but the KSU guy flopped hard. I'd have to look again to see how bad the call was. But Lightfoot was definitely expecting the call.

If KU brings that same game for when Baylor comes to Lawrence, they'll still get murdered. That was pathetic.

Refs are usually reluctant to blow the whistle at the end of games. Svi took advantage. The defense should have been more aggressive. The ref probably would not have called an obvious foul either.

KSU played it probably the way I would have. They did a good job denying Mason and Graham. Then it is an easy dump off to Lucas who had established position really well all night. And you damn sure can't give Jackson an inch. All you can do is have his man pick him up a little earlier, but from the players on the floor and what they'd done all night, I would make Svi beat you if I was defending KU. He did.

You're right about refs swallowing their whistles on final seconds.

It's great anytime we beat KSU, even though we've done it like 70 of the last 76 times we've played. Our fanbase under 40 years old doesn't remember the Ted Owens years when beating them was a 50-50 proposition at best. In Ted's last 9 games vs. KSU or MU, he won.....0.

Anyone here subscribed to Kenpom? I've never attempted to get into analytics for college hoops before, so I figured it'd be a great subscription. However, unlike Fangraphs for baseball, I don't see a guide anywhere to help me comprehend the data that I am looking at.

It's nowhere near as valuable as FG, because the sport isn't anywhere as complex. The free version at Kenpom.com is all I use. He does some stuff about conference rankings and POY leaders but I don't see any value in that since all I care about is KU.

I guess we'll have to count on the peer review process (beers at the bar) righting that wrong...

Edit: And that's not directed at KU, they are a great basketball program, it's directed at officials and people who think official don't decide outcomes, or deserve to be scrutinized.
