I'm not saying it's a lie, just that it doesn't really mean anything. The Falcons said Penix was their QB2. I'm sure the Vikings are saying McCarthy was a top 3 QB for them as well.
I also don’t want to hear Sean Payton’s lies about Mahomes. He’s covering his ass.
Sean likes players that play in his system. He just had a QB who extends plays in Russell Wilson and he never ever liked that type of QB. That was that the first time he had a QB with any similarity to Mahomes. Brees, Winston, Beidgewater were all mechanical guys that were strict to the system.
I think Sean knew he passed on a great QB and is protecting his legacy. [Reply]

Payton owes his entire career to Brees...outside of lucking him into in, he's done jack shit.

Payton didn’t like Russ because he had too many negative plays and he didn’t process fast enough.
If you listen to Payton’s interviews pertaining to Mahomes, the first thing he always points out is how smart he is and how quickly he can process on the field.
The Mahomes interest is not made up. Sean Payton told Jordan Spieth and Drew Brees about it on draft day that year.:-)
Spoiler!
Around dinnertime in Louisiana, pro golfer Ryan Palmer—good friend of Saints coach Sean Payton—and pal Jordan Spieth drove over to the Saints’ facility for a treat: In town for the Zurich Classic, Spieth and Palmer were invited to sit in the Saints’ draft room for the first round. Spieth’s a huge football fan. “I’d never been in a war room before, and I was excited,” Spieth, three-time major winner, recalled last week.
Payton took the golfers on a tour of the facility. “We really like this Patrick Mahomes kid,” Payton told them. “He’s the steal of the draft. I’m not sure everyone knows that.”
…
No way Mahomes and Lattimore would both be there, right? One other wrinkle: At one point, Drew Brees and a couple of Purdue friends walked in—they were going to watch the round, too. That created a bit of an awkward situation.
Spieth said: “Sean came up to us and said, ‘First time Drew’s ever shown up for the draft. He doesn’t know [about the interest in Mahomes]. So if it comes to it, I’m gonna have to tell him.’ “
Payton did tell Brees of the possibility long before the Saints’ pick; Brees, 38, was a pro about it. Still weird in there, though.
…
Then, over the tinny speaker in every team’s draft room, there was an announcement from draft HQ in New York: There’s been a trade. Kansas City is trading with Buffalo. The Chiefs have the 10th pick. The Chiefs are on the clock.
Spieth told me: “Right away, Sean said, ‘Watch. Andy Reid knows. He’s gonna take Mahomes.’”
…
Then the announcement: Kansas City chose Mahomes 10th overall, with the pick just acquired from Buffalo.

If a QB you love is there and your current QB is nearing the end, you trade up and do whatever to get your guy.
Instead of getting Mahomes and changing his legacy forever like Andy he’s gonna be stuck getting bitch slapped by Mahomes for the rest of his career :-) [Reply]

:-) That's what makes it so great every time that used car salesman bloviates about how much he loved Mahomes. Such an idiot. [Reply]

The Saints were in a championship window with a HOF QB who had just thrown for 5,200 yards the year before. (The Saints killed that draft btw)
It's easy to aggressively pursue a quarterback when you believe you've gone as far as you can with Alex Smith.
Drew Brees ended up playing four more years, making the playoffs in each one, with that stellar 2017 draft being a major reason why.
I cannot wait for knowmo's "Training Camp Hot Takes" this year.
He will sing to high heaven that this is the year! HOF'er Nix to HOF'er Franklin all day long at camp against that shit donk D will only serve to further engorge knowmo's raging boner for the upcoming season.
Once they face an actual NFL team the come down will be fucking epic. I doubt we hear from him after game 3. [Reply]
No that draft was an utter failure bc ultimately it didn’t matter one bit. Brees fell apart less than 3 years after that and Sean got stuck in a losing situation with his dick in his hand and ultimately tapped out.
He will be remembered as the coach that didn’t try to get the guy he loved at QB and instead never won anything else in his career bc the guy he loved is in his division kicking his ass.
Thank God Patrick never went to New Orleans bc Sean Payton wasted the last 10 years of Brees career. A HOF QB in his prime without facing Manning or Brady in his conference from 2011-2019 and he never made it back to the Super Bowl.
He’s the most overrated coach ever. Cajun Mike McCarthy :-) [Reply]
