The moves don't make sense to me. Why overpay for Honey Badger if you are just going to gut the pass rush? Are we trying to win now or build for the future? Because we could have tagged Ford and brought back one of the best pass rushers in the league without signing him to a long term contract. I might feel more confident if I had more faith in Spags, but I'm just not convinced that he's some genius DC that's going to turn things around. He's competent, but if we have to spend years rebuilding the D just to end up with a competent defense, that's not going to be good enough.
And if none of our current players fit in the 4-3, then it raises the question of why are switching to the 4-3 in the first place. This isn't the Herm Edwards Chiefs, we were one of the best teams in the league last year. [Reply]

And if he gets hurt again? You spent $16M of your 2019 cap on zilch. Mathieu is going to likely cost 7 to 8 million against the cap, leaving you room to get more players. [Reply]

The Badger is young and under contract for 3 years. He can also play FS, SS, and slot CB.
I thought the bottom had fallen out of the S market but clearly I was dead wrong about that. If it's going back up Badger won't be overpaid in year 3.
And keep in mind how young this defense is now.
People want to build through the draft and then when our GM finally commits to doing it the right way the tears flow about not signing over priced guys. [Reply]

Predicting that our current defense will let offenses stay on the field forever to keep Mahomes on the bench.
Things aren't over, but Veach better have an outstanding draft. Unless you think we are going to be really active during the rest of free agency?
We could, I don't know how much money and cap space we still have.
Who knows, maybe we have a decent amount of cap space left and we will find a couple of quality starters for our defense before the draft. Maybe Veach will prove that he was all the brains and Dorsey was just a dumb punk riding his coattails. Maybe we will draft 4 starters for our defense and a stud left guard/center.
Super Bowl 2019!!!
Maybe, we still got screwed in the Ford trade. Nothing changes that. [Reply]

Kind of like getting screwed on the Marcus Peters trade, right? You know the guy that fell so far that the Rams had to adjust their scheme to cover him up.

It's going to be more pathetic if we don't do anything else.
Houston was a top-3 defensive player for us last year. He held the edge and got to the QB. He was very solid on a really shitty defense. Ford wasn't solid but he was wild and productive.
Putting up top-7 pass rushing numbers this year MAKES Dee Ford a top defensive pass rusher in the NFL. That's the way it works.
Ford put up better numbers than Khalil Mack and we traded him for a 2nd round pick next year when we don't know where it will be. At least this year it would have been the 2nd pick of the round. [Reply]
