I have a hard time finding new music I like but recently came across a band I really like - The Black Angels. I guess they are considered modern psychedelic rock but they have that dark, heavy sound that really hits the right spot in me. Take 70's classic rock and add in some Jesus and Mary Chain buzz and you have their music. All of their albums are very good.

That led me to the bands Black Mountain and The Blackwater Fever (apparently you need to have the work "Black" in your band's name to play this kind of music).

Good call,I discovered them about 10 years ago and still like this one the best from their first project.
