Been meaning to start a thread on this for years and never have for some reason. Big fan of both the original (what I've seen/remember of it...) and the rebooted series.

New doctor:

It was a series of tweets this morning...started by some British writers and Wil Wheaton for whatever that is worth. Saying casting was done and announcement within a month, but maybe today. BBC responded saying it would not be today, but didn't deny the casting was done. Saw it on both Facebook feeds and reddit feeds. Like I said...it was a rumor.

The three names they gave as contenders were Domhnall Gleeson, Daniel Kaluuya and Dominic Cooper. I don't recognize any of them, but that's nothing new for Dr. Who as its ususally someone not familiar to anyone outside the UK. All are 35 or younger. Daniel Kaluuya is 24 or even younger than Matt Smith when he took the role.

That is pretty much what Moffat said...Can't recall the exact quote but something like activating the extreme protocol. We'll make something up.

If you're an old-school Doctor Who fan, at least, then this new rumor is just beyond thrilling. Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool claims reliable sources (plural) tell him that a ton of missing Doctor Who stories have been found. Stories. Not episodes.

That could make the show's 50th anniversary very, very special indeed.

You've probably heard over and over how great Patrick Troughton's performance as the second Doctor is — it's a major inspiration for Matt Smith's incarnation, among other things. But most of Troughton's stories were destroyed during a period of temporary insanity at the BBC in the 1970s. Only one story from his first two seasons exists in full, and all the other Troughton stories we have are from his final season, when the show was running on fumes in all sorts of ways.

Now, Johnston claims, the BBC has turned up a ton of Doctor Who stories that were presumed lost forever. Apparently there was an "eccentric engineer" who worked for some broadcasters in Africa, and he had a love for science fiction and a habit of putting things away for safe keeping. Among the finds, Johnston says, is the complete "Evil of the Daleks," Troughton's second Dalek story from 1967. Along with tons of other stories.

The era of the first Doctor, William Hartnell, is way better represented in the archives than Troughton's is, and Johnston suggests that after this find, we might actually have "The Full Hartnell." Including possibly the complete tape of Hartnell's final episode, "The Tenth Planet" episode four.

Needless to say, this is astoundingly good news, and I really hope it turns out to be true. Fingers crossed!

I would love to see Tenth Planet in its entirety. Troughton has always been my favorite Doctor despite the limited library on file for him.

The sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, will be revisited on June 29th at 7:30 ET. I will be really interested in that one. I rather liked him when he was the Doctor but he didn't get along with producers. He is the only Doctor ever fired. I'm sure they will gloss over the whole thing.

You're probably right. I had it set for DVR as soon as it came up on my list. Hope everyone got to watch it. I know they will have more showings this week.

Doctor Who: Steven Moffat on the anniversary special, the Twelfth Doctor & more...

Steven Moffat has been chatting to EW about the 50th anniversary special, the Twelfth Doctor announcement, and more...

"It's certainly well over an hour," Steven Moffat tells EW about Doctor Who's fiftieth anniversary special. "You could call it movie-length, yeah." That'll do nicely, thank you.

In conversation with EW, the Who showrunner discussed all manner of things, including Matt Smith's departure, saying it was always Smith's plan to do three series, the 50th anniversary, and the Christmas Special before vacating the role. That doesn't mean he didn't try to talk him out of going, though. Comparing Smith's decision to leave with David Tennant's, Moffat said that both wanted to leave on a high to pursue other things, and both reasoned, "If I do another series, I think I might do two more series, or three more series. I think I might never leave."

Moffat called the search for a Twelfth Doctor "terrifying", adding, "There’s a very big range of people who could play it and different ways you could go with it. We must get this right. One false move and the show’s over.” When might the public find out who the final choice is? "Unless we have an insane plan, we’ll announce a new Doctor within days of finalizing the new Doctor. Because it’s very very hard to keep any kind of a secret [...] I think we’ll go public pretty fast."

How will the new Doctor be introduced? "It’ll be the traditional regeneration. You know, the eleventh will fall and the twelfth shall rise. And you’ll see that in the closing moments of the show. I mean, you sometimes sit and think, 'Are there better ways of doing it? Is there a different way of doing it?' But quite honestly what could be better than that?

Unsuprisingly, Moffat was full of praise for John Hurt, describing his role in the anniversary special as "a lovely 50th anniversary treat, I suppose. You get a whole new Doctor played by a proper screen legend". Similar praise went to the fiftieth pairing of Matt Smith and David Tennant's Doctors, "I think the other one that worked brilliantly was Jon Pertwee and Patrick Troughton. They were incredibly funny together. This is very different from that but it’s a sublime double act."

Moffat also gave vague confirmation that we can expect series eight proper to air in late summer 2014, "I think that's probably right. But these things change so often."
