It's the end of the world as we know it... and we feel... fine?
2018 is a season of transition for the Royals, or at least it is at this point. Dayton Moore is back. Will he swing full into THE PROCESS 2.0? Or will he try to load up again and make some reload magic happen?
Pending Free Agents:
1B | Eric Hosmer | San Diego Padres, 8 years, $144 million ($5 million signing bonus; $20 million/year in Yrs 1-5; $13 million/year in Yrs 6-8 wth player opt out)
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: Texas Rangers, 6, $118 million)
3B | Mike Moustaskas | Kansas City Royas, 1, $6.5 million
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: Los Angeles Angels, 5, $98 million)
CF | Lorenzo Cain | Milwaukee Brewers, 5 years, $80 million
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: San Francisco Giants, 4, $68 million)
RP | Mike Minor | Texas Rangers, 3, $28 million
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: Los Angeles Angels, 3, $35 million+ $12 million team option
SP | Jason Vargas | New York Mets, 2, $16 million
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: Baltimore Orioles, 2, $29 million)
SS | Alcides Escobar | Kansas City Royals, 1, $2.5 million
In case I, picks would be #32, 33, and 34, if Alex Cobb of Rays signs for $50 million guaranteed.
Kansas City will likely have 5 of the top 40-45 picks in the draft, and the bonus pool money should rival that of the teams drafting 1-3 in the 2017 draft. This should give KC tremendous flexibility in acquiring talent that otherwise might slip or not be "signable."
2018 Draft Names to Watch
RHP Kumar Rocker, N Oconnee HS, Georgia.
Spoiler!
Possibly goes top 10 but is a big, physical SP with ace potential. Moore and co. will be all over him if he slips a bit and could offer top 10 money at No. 16
OF Jarred Kelenic, Waukasha West HS, WI
Spoiler!
Kelenic is the top prep bat, toolsy OF. Royals would be ecstatic to have shot at him.
1B Triston Casas, American Heritage HS (FL).
Spoiler!
Tremendous raw power, best in HS bats. Royals typically like HS arms or HS bats with "special" tools. He qualifies.
RHP Carter Stewart, Eau de Gallie HS (Ga).
Spoiler!
Another big, physical specimen with huge upside. More likely to be available mid-first than Rocker.
ANY Any, Any (Any). Any current top projected pick who slides for injury concerns. Includes current top prospect prospect SP Brady Singer, U of Florida. [Reply]

Pretty sure I spoke directly to what actually happened - they're gonna have to pay him like Kirk Cousins to keep him now. I even said I'd have made the trade if I could've gotten an extension in place. His market value exploded because of this little test drive of theirs. That was the flip-side to the coin on this deal.
And for all the reasons I already spoke to, I'd be damn wary of making him one of the top 5 highest paid passers in the game. I'll bet you that's what he gets.
On the strength of 5 games.
It went as well as it possibly could have gone for them and it's still going to be a potential problem. They have the ability to franchise him so that's what they truly gained here, but mostly they're going to get to spend twice as much on their quarterback now and potentially put themselves in Raiders territory with Carr and his deal all because they wanted to take him for a test drive?
Good luck 49ers. But with Kyle Shanahan at the helm, they'd have been just as likely to strike gold on a drafted QB who doesn't present the contractual issues that Garapollo is about to. Ryan's decline speaks to Shanahan's ability to get production from guys. He's making Garapollo look great - he'd have made his draft pick look damn good as well. [Reply]
"Someday I'll figure out why teams keep trading for these Patriot backups as though they're anything more than clipboard carriers for the greatest HC/QB duo in NFL history. Jimmy G isn't a big guy and he has a history of dings/scratches, which bodes ill for a guy that's never been a starter - why do they think he can handle the added workload? And he's been a big time dink/dunker in his limted run in NE to boot.
He doesn't have tools that jump off the page by any means. His arm talent is fine; 2nd, maybe 3rd round pick caliber. His athleticism is also just fine; nothing exceptional but it doesn't hold him back. He's a big ball of 'meh' with a ceiling as a fringe top 10 passer at best, IMO."
CJ Beathard is a bag of boiled crap. I couldn't figure out why he even got drafted.
I said Garapollo had fine athleticism and 2nd/3rd round arm talent. Combine that with 3+ years in the league and you're going to get a guy that's a damn sight better than someone like Beathard. What's that have to do with Shanahan getting something out of an actual drafted QBOTF rather than a guy that's an obvious long-term backup?
And Garapollo DOES have a history of dings and he ISN'T a big guy. 5 games says nothing about his durability and again, the 49ers are going to get to pay HUGE to keep him now.
Would you be excited to pay a smaller QB with a now 8 game track record like he's one of the best passers in the NFL? You that sold on Garoppollo already? Because the 49ers just took their best shot at getting the best asset in football - a cost controlled young quarterback - and decided that they'd rather gamble probably $60+ million in guarantees on Jimmy G.
Yeah, obviously a no-brainer.
This isn't the gotchya that you think it is. It doesn't surprise me that you're too dense to even understand that. [Reply]

Last one -
Uh, yeah - I'm sold on Jimmy G. He's really fucking good.
Way better than Derek Carr. Eye test - Jimmy G has it all. He'll be a stud for 10+ years. Great trade. [Reply]

Don't shudder.
He was excellent offensively in Omaha last year and with regular at bats, will be no worse offensively than EsCobar, and possibly much much better. [Reply]
Hey Duncan dumbass Keitzman has an interesting theory that with about 5 weeks til guess head to Spring Training owners are colluding not to pay these guys alot that's why the market hasn't taken shape. Thoughts? [Reply]

Kietzman is a moron but may be a blind squirrel with a nut on that one. [Reply]
