India is being ravaged by COVID:

"Covid-19 has hit this country with a ferocity not seen before...but not unexpected either". WARNING - this is a very distressing but necessary report from @yogital, Fred Scott and Sanjay Ganguly on the human catastrophe unfolding in #Delhi. The wife made a full recovery yesterday (3rd day), only had mild flu like conditions (2nd day), I just had site of the shot soreness and a little fatigue. We both got the shots in our non-dominant arm. Today, everything's back to normal. (Moderna 2nd shot)

This is what happens when a pandemic runs unchecked. You end up with people lined up to simply get someone inside the hospital.

A key responsibility of public health officials is to help people understand properly the risk of major health threats. Using these poll results - showing that most vastly overestimate actual C19 hospitalization risk - to assess their performance, I'd fire them all tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/QgsW6fOBF5

Looks like Canada and UK have banned travel from India. I wonder if the US will follow soon. The "double mutant" variant that they're dealing with looks to be pretty bad.

They were at 300,000 cases a day. Be at a million soon. This could actually cause a catastrophe or civil unrest if they don't do something serious soon.

Banning travel may well be reasonable, but that variant along with the other variants will eventually find their way into the US if they haven't already.

And it should be clear by now that these variants are hitting younger people than the original virus did.

Given the number of people vaccinated, I don't expect the US to see a surge like we had last winter. However, it also appears there will remain enough unvaccinated individuals that the country won't reach herd immunity.

It seems rather likely that these variants will eventually sicken a lot of Americans who could have been spared if they had chosen to gotten the vaccine.

The vaccine appears to provide better protection against some of these variants than having gotten sick with the original covid virus.

It may only be a trickle here and there and it may get better over summer before getting worse in the fall.

But the variant that is in India will eventually be widespread in the US if we don't reach herd immunity. And herd immunity doesn't look to be in our future.

Agreed - hopefully the vaccines will provide adequate protection against the variants. I just hit two weeks after my second shot and feeling good about getting back out again. It's crazy that half a world away it's worse than it's ever been.

But the vaccinations of older people do not explain rising hospitalizations among people younger than 60, including those in their 20s and 30s. Public health experts say the outbreak — driven by the B.1.1.7 variant of the virus, which is more contagious and more severe — is spreading rapidly in younger age groups. And across the state, doctors and nurses are increasingly reporting a concerning trend: Younger patients are coming in more often with serious cases of Covid-19.

According to state data from Maryland, where overall hospitalizations are up from last month, people in their 30s have a 5 percent chance of being hospitalized if they learn they have the virus

100 years ago - India would lose a million people a year to malaria and yellow fever. Crazy shit.

Did it really take an MIT study for this, I am really surprised how much they have downplayed the airborne aspect of the virus , study al

Staying 2 metres apart does little to limit indoor spread of COVID-19: study

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/newsp...ehp&li=AAggNb9

more evidence masks help .

For example, the site estimates it would take two days for 25 people wearing masks and talking to be exposed to the virus if an infected person entered the room.

If those 25 people are not wearing masks and speaking, that exposure time drops to 77 minutes. If they're singing without a mask, they would be exposed in three minutes.

On a side not Toronto has started using its field Hospital and we are running out of vaccines, good times.
