That seems a bit excessive. Most of the estimates I've seen have had us regular folk getting the vaccine by the end of April 2021. That means back to "normal" by the fall, at the latest.

18 months? Not sure if this is sarcasm or not...

When there is likely going to be 1/3rd of the population, at most, that gets the vaccine there will be a long way to go which is the reason that we will need to continue to wear masks and social distance.
We might end up with more than 1/3rd of the population but only if it is made mandatory at most work places. If it is required by all medical institutions, police, education, daycare and then all the kids that attend these places not to mention all government facilities that will likely be mad mandatory for entry the percentage of the population will be a lot higher.

On a side note there has not been a large enough number of doses secured by our government to inoculate most of our citizens.

Not sarcasm. How long do you think it is going to take to get vaccines to all of the people that want the vaccine? Then they don't even know how long it is going to make a person immune.

Relatively certain this is false. There are purchases made to buy a large number of vaccines from various companies. The manufacturing just isn't up to scale yet.

Then why is it widely publicized that our Pfizer offered more doses to the US and the US turned them down and then those were sold to Europe. Then it was determined that we would not have enough doses. The only number I have seen is 6.4 million doses for the US from each company that we backed. That leaves us way short of enough doses.
I would love to be wrong. Please if you can find info to prove other wise post it.

I understand the reports of the government deciding not to purchace additional Pfizer vaccines, but there are still a lot of vaccines on the way. Obviously not all of these have been approved or even finished phase 3 trials yet.

Dr. Slaoui was on CBS this morning and said that they expect to have 100M immunized by the middle of March and by the end of May/middle of June they will have enough for the totality of the US population. If that's true, we should be back to some degree of normalcy by this summer. How fast we get back to normal will depend on how quickly this can be produced and distributed. I'm hopeful.

Conspiracy theory time:

How do you get everyone to wear a mask? Tell them it's to protect me from you, not you from me.

How do you get them to keep wearing masks after vaccinated? Tell them just because you got the vaccine doesn't mean you won't transmit the disease.

So it's the same thing all over again....well the vaccine protects you from me but not me from you......or something like that

:-)

I agree in general, though I would probably add some factor about how many people have been vaccinated. I'll wait until the natural spread gets tamped down. However, since I'll probably be later in line that may not really be a factor. I think Colorado will likely be a highly vaccinated state, or at least Denver will be a highly vaccinated city.
