It's the end of the world as we know it... and we feel... fine?
2018 is a season of transition for the Royals, or at least it is at this point. Dayton Moore is back. Will he swing full into THE PROCESS 2.0? Or will he try to load up again and make some reload magic happen?
Pending Free Agents:
1B | Eric Hosmer | San Diego Padres, 8 years, $144 million ($5 million signing bonus; $20 million/year in Yrs 1-5; $13 million/year in Yrs 6-8 wth player opt out)
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: Texas Rangers, 6, $118 million)
3B | Mike Moustaskas | Kansas City Royas, 1, $6.5 million
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: Los Angeles Angels, 5, $98 million)
CF | Lorenzo Cain | Milwaukee Brewers, 5 years, $80 million
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: San Francisco Giants, 4, $68 million)
RP | Mike Minor | Texas Rangers, 3, $28 million
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: Los Angeles Angels, 3, $35 million+ $12 million team option
SP | Jason Vargas | New York Mets, 2, $16 million
Spoiler!
(DI's Guess: Baltimore Orioles, 2, $29 million)
SS | Alcides Escobar | Kansas City Royals, 1, $2.5 million
In case I, picks would be #32, 33, and 34, if Alex Cobb of Rays signs for $50 million guaranteed.
Kansas City will likely have 5 of the top 40-45 picks in the draft, and the bonus pool money should rival that of the teams drafting 1-3 in the 2017 draft. This should give KC tremendous flexibility in acquiring talent that otherwise might slip or not be "signable."
2018 Draft Names to Watch
RHP Kumar Rocker, N Oconnee HS, Georgia.
Spoiler!
Possibly goes top 10 but is a big, physical SP with ace potential. Moore and co. will be all over him if he slips a bit and could offer top 10 money at No. 16
OF Jarred Kelenic, Waukasha West HS, WI
Spoiler!
Kelenic is the top prep bat, toolsy OF. Royals would be ecstatic to have shot at him.
1B Triston Casas, American Heritage HS (FL).
Spoiler!
Tremendous raw power, best in HS bats. Royals typically like HS arms or HS bats with "special" tools. He qualifies.
RHP Carter Stewart, Eau de Gallie HS (Ga).
Spoiler!
Another big, physical specimen with huge upside. More likely to be available mid-first than Rocker.
ANY Any, Any (Any). Any current top projected pick who slides for injury concerns. Includes current top prospect prospect SP Brady Singer, U of Florida. [Reply]

Was it you or Hamas that was beating me up on Scott Alexander in the other thread?
{shrug}
May have been me. I said I didn't like him as a 'key' acquisition, you mentioned some changes in his approach and I ceded that I'm not that well versed on his history. Like you with Martinez, I'm wary of late-arriving prospects who burst onto the scene.
You believe he made some positive changes that make that his new normal. I'm of similar mind on Martinez.
But unlike Martinez, I suspect Alexander will get a chance to prove it.
As for Moustakas, I never recalled him being svelte, but rather just a big man; sorta a shorter version of Rolen - kinda country strong. Last year, OTOH, dude just looked fat to me. It's possible he's always been tubbier than I realized so I chalked up his defensive decline to him being overweight after the knee (it happened to Allen Craig after he hurt his foot). Maybe it's just a small sample size issue - as you've noted, defensive metrics are notoriously volatile/erratic.
But hell, even if it's just an issue of his base body type being...uh...stocky, that doesn't bode well as he enters his 30s. Not being Pablo Sandoval is damning with faint praise at best. I mean hell, Juan Uribe was still playing SS at Moose's age and he'd turned into a planet by his early 30s. The bad body guys make me nervous when the clock turns past their 20s.
The price can make just about damn near anyone palatable, but at the money/term that Boras is still going to be seeking for those guys, I'm not biting. [Reply]

Any of it? Then your homer glasses are clouding your judgment. At least memories of fonder days could be.
Holland especially is a ticking timebomb. Losing velocity annually with a high-stress delivery and a slider heavy arsenal from a relief pitcher. Pretty much every red flag that can exist for a pitcher exists for Greg Holland.
The 2014 Holland is dead and buried. The '15 version is pretty much a best case scenario and by the end of '17 he'd shown a 2 mph velocity dip over where he was at the start of the year. That doesn't bode well for a 32 year old reliever who leans hard on a high-stress, loud delivery breaking ball. [Reply]
NOOOOO!!! i love those guys and Hosmer but we can't spend money like this. Welcome to mediocrity again. At least we won't have those 100 loss seasons but damn [Reply]

Not a great idea, IMO, but not my money either, so.... [Reply]
He was a 4 WAR guy who was 2nd in the AL in OBP and he's 28. Those guys get paid. 21 isn't that big a number, not anymore.
One caveat: the cable industry is in freefall. I kept telling y'all there's no guarantee at all we will get a big cable deal in 2019, but you don't want to listen [Reply]

the only thing that might save them is these streaming services but thats a long shot. I agree with you though going to be tough to get a great tv contract. [Reply]

He was a 4 WAR guy for the first time in his career, in a contract year. Those guys get paid? Fine, then let someone else pay for that.
And 21 may not be a big number (although for the Royals I think it is), but seven years definitely is a big one.
