So it's all a producer/show plot twist/trick to make sure the audience is on board that Jon Snow is the nephew of Danetys?
Spoiler!
I think it is more about showing that Lyanna and Rhaegar were in love and perhaps even were married, so that Jon is not a bastard, and he is in fact a legitimate Targ with a real claim to the Iron Throne.
Right now, based on the show's treatment of it and the TOJ reveal, everyone could think Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna and that Jon is still a bastard, and worse yet, a bastard born of kidnap and rape.
So Rhaegar should be in flashbacks only I would think, he is definitely not still alive. If they wanted to bring in another Targ character in present day Westeros, they would just do what they did with young Aegon in the books.

Well, it didn't help that the Mad King burned Ned's dad and brother alive and then sent a message to Jon Arryn to send Robert and Ned (both wards of Jon Arryn at the time) to him. Even without the "kidnapping" of Lyanna, it would have been hard to avoid a war at that point when there was no way they would comply with that order. [Reply]

Good on you for remembering that. I had forgotten about the Mad King burning everyone he thought disloyal before the war even started. [Reply]

Wasn't Rhaegar already married to Elia at that point? I don't think the Mountain had killed her before Lyanna and Rhaegar hooked up. I could be wrong.
(CNN) — Maisie Williams is the ultimate "Game of Thrones" tease.
The first script from the HBO drama's upcoming Season 7 was apparently so intense, the star couldn't contain her emotions. And because this is 2016, she unleashed them all on Twitter.
"Just finished reading season 7," she wrote, "s--t gets REAL."
In the course of five tweets, the actress went on to make the wait for the new season even more unbearable for fans of the show.
"I'd start preparing yourselves now," she continued. "Scratch that, nothing will prepare you for this."
"Game of Thrones" Season 7 is currently in production. The new season will be the show's penultimate.
Last month, HBO confirmed its Emmy-nominated series would conclude after Season 8.
The next season of the show is expected to debut in 2017 but will premiere later than usual.

Brandon died of strangulation staining against the chain contraption the Mad King placed on him while making him watch his dad burn to death.
But close enough and yea, war was coming at that point.

I must say, it is freaking weird to see Kohn Snow driving a car.
They should have cut his hair or beard different or shown more of him to see modern clothes. But it looked just damn like John Snow driving a car. [Reply]
