OK, the time has finally come... we have a new server!
I will be spending tonight and all day tomorrow transitioning to the new digs... I don't expect it to affect us until late tomorrow afternoon.
I will make give everybody a warning then take us offline for (hopefully!) 3-4 hours...
When we are done, we will have a new home with 6 TIMES the power and RAM as before... I expect to see some MAJOR upgrades in performance... once we have settled into the new server, I will start to prep us for a major upgrade to our Vbulletin software... but that may wait until the post season...
I know it's been a long time coming, but bear with me for a little longer and it will all be worth it! [Reply]
I'm cautiously optimistic that the changes to the database structure are game changers and that we won't notice any slowdowns at all now, even during games. We'll see. [Reply]

Sunday will be the true litmus test, but so far so good. Browsing CP the last few days has been like cruising the Autobahn. [Reply]

Yeah, I've been monitoring a lot of stuff on the backend, and before the changes there would usually at least be a few queries (stuff that runs to load stuff) sitting there in line waiting for their turn to be run. Now it's pretty much always just stuff sitting there at 0 seconds and then gone. No one will hardly notice it, but at its fastest submitting a post is a little slower than it used to be, but that happens a few thousand times per day compared to just viewing which happens hundreds of thousands of times per day.
Technically this new system uses a ton more RAM and CPU, but we weren't using what we had before. Basically, we changed from a system that was hammering our slowest resource (hard drives) to a system that uses our fastest.
So again, I'm optimistic. I haven't seen a blip of a slowdown since I changed over that last table a week ago. [Reply]
it may be an issue on my end. just stayed on the gamethread for the first time in a long time. it was okay, but i do like my chatties, i missed you guys..... [Reply]

I didn't personally notice anything, but I'd imagine we'll always have weird little blips here and there. As long as it's not 1) recurring or 2) related to traffic volume, I'm not going to worry about it much.
Regarding the "a little slow" with regard to posting, submitting a post will always be a tiny bit slower than it used to be due to the different DB structure. (To oversimplify, we've prioritized reading over writing a tiny bit.) Shouldn't take more than 5-10 seconds at most, though. [Reply]

Even still, when I hit submit it (generally) posts immediately. It was taking several seconds for pages to load and for my replies to post. It wasn't as bad as game days last year, but it was noticeably slower than it has been recently. It only lasted 15-20 mins though. [Reply]
