Only a matter of time before money dictates pushing for more than 1 per year.
Short term profits won't justify losing the luster of the anticipation and huge draws like they had when they limited releases and they took on an event level of interest, buzz, and cultural significance.
Variety will be the key. If they continue with the "A Star Wars Story" storylines, they will be under pressure to not only push out quality material but relevant material to the Star Wars fan. My own personal feeling is that they can go on this pace for about another 8 years or so before people start getting bored/restless with it. [Reply]

2016 - Rogue One
2017 - Episode VIII
2018 - Han Solo
2019 - Episode IX
2020 - A Star Wars Story
To date, there are no "Episodes" planned beyond IX but there are more Star Wars Stories in development. IMO, the right move would be to suspend the "Episodes" until at the earliest, 2030, then go back to the Old Republic of 1,000 years ago and introduce a young Yoda.
That way, they can mine new stories with a familiar character while the stars of the current trilogy age. Lucasfilm could then re-visit those characters 15 years after their introduction and bring in a whole new set of characters and stories.
There has to be a resolution in IX. It can't be a "cliff hanger" if it's the third in the trilogy. The main actors are too young (especially Daisy Ridley and John Boyega) to have another trilogy featuring them beginning in 2021.
It would make more sense to go with a Live Action TV show featuring those characters or maybe even an animated series. [Reply]
