Laura Dern says her Star Wars: The Last Jedi character was Force sensitive

There was always something enigmatic and ethereal about Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, but it turns out — something more was at work. Laura Dern has revealed that her violet-haired Resistance leader, like Leia Organa herself, was Force sensitive. Even after multiple viewings there are still surprises to discover about The Last Jedi, and as the movie debuts Tuesday on Blu-ray, here’s something else for Star Wars fans to consider.

Dern made the revelation in a recent interview with EW after being asked if there was any more to Holdo’s backstory than we saw in the film. She said she talked in depth with writer-director Rian Johnson, producer Ram Bergman and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about the character’s history

“In their minds, and in their understanding of the origin story, we know that she was a true rebel in the Resistance, and in our culture we might have called her a hippie,” Dern says. “But she was longing for peace, and a revolutionary in that way, and wanted to be trained by and led by Leia, who taught her everything she knew. She wanted to come up in the ranks to support Leia’s mission, but also had this otherworldly side that does involve the Force.”

She doesn’t swing a lightsaber. She doesn’t stand on her head. She doesn’t pick up a box with her mind. But then again, neither did Leia. Holdo wields the Force in a different way. As Luke Skywalker tries to impart to Rey in the film, connecting to the Force isn’t always about fighting. Sometimes it’s just about being able to see beyond yourself and tap into a strength and vision that manifests itself not in combat but in leadership.

This is more than a fan theory. The Force connection is something Dern and the filmmakers actively embedded in Holdo’s character. “There’s something about her that longs to protect it, and holds that with great care,” Dern says. “There’s a sort of a light on and a wisdom that she speaks about in the film, and speaks to Oscar Isaac’s character briefly about it.”

Here we get into spoiler territory, so fair warning …. But that also explains why Holdo wasn’t afraid to sacrifice in a critical moment. She knew there is life and power beyond what we see. “Yeah, her primary goal was to protect the light, to protect the Force, and to keep the revolutionaries alive,” Dern says. “And I think the film speaks so beautifully to that with this last image of the next generation of the Resistance, you know?”

Dern is referring to the child commonly known as “Broom Boy,” the young slave on Canto Bight who looks up at the stars while cleaning the stable, and raises the broom he mystically drew into his hand as though it was a lightsaber.

The aspect of Holdo not only fits with the theme of the “democratization of the Force,” but it corresponds with other elements of Star Wars canon, like Claudia Gray’s YA novel Leia, A Princess of Alderaan, set when the future general was a teenage diplomat-in-training. In that book, released last year, Leia befriends a young Holdo and notes her unusual monotone, brightly colored outfits, and overall haunting demeanor. She’s … weird.

At first, it’s off-putting for Leia, as it was years later with Isaac’s Poe Dameron. Holdo’s strangeness may have adjusted as she got older, but it is a reflection of her deep Force connection. In a way, she is a savant. And that may also be part of her deep connection with with Leia. This is where it strays into fan theory, since Dern says it wasn’t specified by Johnson, but these two women may have shared a friendship forged through the Force.

“It sounds great,” Dern says with a laugh. “I mean, you would think, you would think.”

the movie did suck. on a star wars scale it was a 4/10 given they had the last vestiges of the old crew left, and did fuck all with them. well it's too late now, it's only chewie left to carry the torch. :-)

and the way they killed off luke was as bad as watching the series finale of roseanne to learn dan had died years ago. :-)

That said, and I know that this might sound strange, but I think the future of Star Wars is on the small screen, not the big screen, at least not Post-Skywalker Saga.

The reason why Marvel films are so successful is that people are entrenched with the characters and have been into them since childhood, whether that's 20, 30, 40 or 50+ years ago. They have an incredibly strong fan base built over decades of comics.

Star Wars popularity was due to the Original Trilogy. People adored Luke, Leia, Han, Lando and Chewie while Darth Vader is the greatest bad guy of all time. Remove those characters, as Disney has done, and the popularity wanes, as we've seen with Episode VII. Lucasfilm is completely delusional if they believe that people will purchase tickets in droves for a story unconnected to the Skywalker saga with brand new characters in a different part of the galaxy, just because it has "Star Wars" in the title.

On the other hand, Lucasfilm can build a "brand" with a TV series, as we've seen with Rebels and Clone Wars. I'd imagine that the new Benioff & Weiss series will introduce characters over multiple seasons that people will grow to love but that it will take time to develop and get to the point where people want to see some of these characters or settings on the big screen.
Kids love the new characters - especially Rey, BB8 and Kylo Ren.

Watched it again last night with my parents, who hadn't seen it, and loved it. It gets better every time.

Holdo theory is stupid. There was no reason for the character to even exist.

Better writing would have elevated an insure-of-himself Poe into the Holdo role and given Leia the scene where she self-sacrifices by ramming the last rebel cruiser into Snoke’s ship.

Marginal/forgettable character who doesn’t reveal a silly plan to try to create tension is force sensitive? Who cares.

She didn't tell him the plan for the very reason that once he learned what was going on, he leaked it, and the First Order found out through DJ.

Holdo was right. Poe was a dumbass.

Loose lips sink starships.

That's a fucking garbage statement. You were a kid at one time.

My 7 year old daughter loved the last two Star Wars movies. The first Star Wars movie that she watched? Rogue One. She still hasn't see any of the original 3 or the prequels.

My oldest liked Rey and dressed as her on Halloween two years ago.

Kylo, Poe, Finn and Rose? Not so much.

Ashoka Tano is by far the best female character in the Star Wars galaxy, with Sabine Wren and Hera Sendulla closely behind.

Assaj Ventress was a badass, too, as was Jyn Erso.

Rey kinda pales in comparison.

I think Rey is much stronger character than Jyn Erso for sure. I'd also rank her above Sabine. I might put her above Hera, too. It's a tough call. Those are pretty well matched.

But Ahsoka is far and away the best character in Star Wars. Hands down. I totally agree with you on that.

Jyn Erso was a fully developed character. We knew who her parents were, that she struggled most of her life to just stay alive, that she spent time in Imperial prisons, that she loved her parents deeply and that she gave her life with the hope of destroying the Emperor's most powerful weapon, the Death Star.

Her character had so much weight.

Rey, on the other hand, was a Mary Sue. Even though she was a poor scavenger that lived in the burned out shell of an AT-AT, when faced with danger the first time in her life, she beat up male aliens, alluded Imperial soldiers, knew how to fly the Millennium Falcon, knew to how to "hotwire" a cargo ship in order to kill Rathars, had a Force vision and was able to defeat a fully trained Dark Side Force user.

We know nothing of her true character because everything's been easy for her. No struggle, no real resistance, no real challenges.

She's a Disney Princess.

In the better late than never category, finally picked this up today on bluray coming home from work today

Was reeeally looking forward to it, until I totally stumbled upon a MAJOR BUMMER SPOILER somewhere else... it was a bit of news that pissed me off so bad that I'll almost certainly never bother watching the third installment

Upon reading it, said to myself...'who is left to give a **** about?'
