Nzoner's Game Room>Four major art projects for new KCI terminal revealed
neech 10:50 PM 04-09-2021
The first of four major art projects for the new single terminal airport at KCI have been revealed.

More than 1,000 artists from around the world submitted inquiries after Kansas City announced an international search for artists.
The city said the four works of art were chosen because they either reflected the wonder of travel or Kansas City history.

The budget for artwork at KCI’s new terminal is $5.65 million. Kansas City’s single-terminal airport is expected to open on budget and on time in early 2023.

“The fact that we’ve been through a pandemic over the last year and yet this project remains on time, on schedule, and on budget is a testament to the good work of the team,” said Justin Meyer with the KC Aviation Department.

You can see the renderings of the art projects in the gallery below.

Entitled "Molten Swing"

Entitled "The Air up There"

Entitled "Ornithology"

Entitled "Fountain of Resonance"

"Molten Swing" looks kind of like a mosaic dog or cat to me, it might look cool though but not sure what to make of it at this point.

"The Air up There" simply looks like some lights on the ceiling, again it might look better when you're actually there I hope.

"Ornithology" reminds me of those attacking creatures in the Pitch Black movie. You just knew one of the artwork they chose would have a WTF moment and this is it.

"Fountain of Resonance" I approve of this one.
:-)

Thoughts?

Yeah, ever since the 24x7 strong-arm moves the KCPD did during the NFL draft weekend to keep people from stopping has disappeared, word is that, during prime flight arrival times, from cell lot to getting to the curb is at around 45-60 minutes.

Are the backups more because of too much traffic or people in the pickup line for too long?

If they started giving people tickets that charged after the first 10 minutes would that help? Similar to what they have in parking garages at shopping centers?

If everyone were perfect automons and got in and off the curb in thirty seconds, it would no doubt be fine...

Picked up my parents at the airport yesterday and took advantage of the parking garage this time. $1.00 for 30 minutes. Curb pickup wouldn't work well (my parents are old af)

There was a steady flow of pickups on the curb and I didn't see any hayseeds violating the rules.

Had absolutely no issues with the new airport. Flew in and out. Not as quick as it used to be for departures (have to walk down the terminal longer) but not a big deal. Tons and tons of great food options.

For arrivals, I woulda always get to the baggage claim way before my bag was ready anyway. If you don't have a bag then it may take 10 min longer but they have nice walking excalator things. My GF picked me up and had no issue with the cell phone lot. There are two lanes it appears to be able to pick people up and moved along just fine.

All in all a huge plus for this area. We now look like a real city when people go to our airport!

Flew out on early 05/11- no problems. Food court was firing up. Plenty of people to cover the 1500/2000 folks who were flying out early.

Return trip today. Got off plane. Leisurely walked to my bag carousel, pulled bags, went out the door and walked directly onto the shuttle. The only issue with this airport is it’s too far out. But it’s a way better experience.

Of course there will always be the old people crying and complaining. It’s what they’ve always done as the world passes them by.

I'm not in the totally one extreme or the other camp.

Overall the new terminal is a big improvement over the old one, but it's kind of like commenting on Reid or Veach, their not always perfect.

The inside of the terminal is great.

However, for a terminal that is brand new and is not operating at capacity and was even designed to be able to add some additional gates...

The curb space for the public pickup feels cramped. Not keen to see it if those new gates do get added and the airport is operating at capacity.

Is it a deal breaker, the sky is falling? No.

But for something just built from scratch it sure seems having a few more lanes would have made for a quicker more pleasant experience now and potentially in a more busy future. And certainly for peak times such at holidays.

If the KC public is doing better at being more efficient, great.

Good post...

And yes, if they get the traffic thing figured out, things may simmer down, we'll see. But they 100% need to, just like Chicago, keep cops out there enforcing the "don't even stop if you don't have somebody standing right there ready to load" rule.

I'm not sure what we got was worth the cost, but it's done now I suppose.

Flew out Wednesday 6/7 at 6:30am and the line was silly long. The son and I just ended up hopping out about 50 yards short of the beginning of the drop-off zone and walking up the road. Nothing like the HUGE Wednesday morning departure rush.

Flew in last night from EWR (another shithole with "new terminal" smell!!!), and WOW, what a shit show.I'll admit 11pm is one of MCI's two "busy" :-) times, there were four carousels going at once. Of course nothing was open, I didn't expect that, but the pickup area was a complete fucking mess. And my wife sat in the cell phone lot until our carousel started sending bags down. It's nice to have your bags come first, but it doesn't mean much when your pickup is sitting back near Paris Street. We've decided we'll use Execucar moving forward, there's just no really good way. Hell, even the idea of moving from the cell lot to the garage when the plane lands, or just going straight to the garage was a fail, it was full.

I know, I know, they're going to build more parking. And, any day now, KC will become a hub for some airline... :-)

I know some people really want this new beast to be "great", but it's not. It's just not.

Did you enjoy the art? Thankfully my wife quit her part-time Mon and Tues experiment at Martin City Brewing. No business no tips rarely worked there as she was shifted to other spots that had traffic. Most the places are really struggling closing early. Shit pay along with meager tips she fely bad because her boss with OHM was Filipino so she felt she was letting him down. I did back flips when she said she had enough.

Zach will be in here shortly to tell us all were all hillbillies and don't know how to use an airport. Eat a shit sandwich ya shit eater and stuff your mouth full of Sly and Q's nuts.

What is all that dollar store crap hanging from the ceiling?
And is that LED thing supposed to be a fountain? It already looks old and for the "city of fountains" it should have been a real fountain.
The clouds are a cool idea but it is ruined by the ceiling lights running through them.
There is a weird/interesting landscape feature just north of the terminal. There are columns which support bronze triangular plaques with information on them but whatever happened in fabrication caused the words to be obstructed on the edges. Hopefully there is a fix coming.
For a fan of aviation architecture and art I'm disappointed.

The MCI concept and development information was pretty great, but also unintentionally demonstrates how much design and thought went into the prior effort and offering exciting promises for the future while contrasting with the new unremarkable cube that has been built.
The glass jetways are cool.
Lots of glass windows to watch the runways and ground operations.
Lots of serve your own beer, pretty great idea for alcoholics needing quick refueling.
Airport function was easy, good experience. Not busy when I was there.
The Lyft driver complained on and on about how some lanes are shut down in the evening causing all kinds of problems and backups and seemingly unnecessary delays.

This is monumental for our city and this is how you respond???

Wow. Take some time and appreciate the art already
