My old man got an email from Blue Cross telling him that he can receive doctor's consultations online via Physicians Now. He's a little leery, but I think it's a good idea.

EDit: six months from now I'll probably find a camshow of him giving himself a prostate exam on Pornhub

A few years ago my cousin went to the ER in Hannibal when she developed serious abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with colitis. Over the following months none of the treatments or medications did anything to improve her situation, and her pain level was constant and grew intolerable. They told her that she'd need to have her colon removed. Then she went back to the ER over the pain one night, and at that point was correctly diagnosed with have a ruptured appendix. A RUPTURED FUCKING APPENDIX. After it was removed, the pain went away completely. There was nothing wrong with her colon at all.

Through one of the attorneys in my office, I got her in touch with one of the leading medical malpractice attorneys in Missouri, who told her that because of the way the laws are set up, she had no case to sue them for the hell she went through because she ended up suffering no permanent damage.

I shit you not.

Beware of small town hospitals and the doctors who work there.

I have my doubts that her appendix was ruptured for a month. Also, I am imagining at some point your cousins received imaging?

Also, if someone recommended a colectomy, she was probably evaluated by a surgeon as well?

I work with a lot of older people and it's amazing how many times their doctors fuck things up. One guy was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. A month later they told him it might just be a serious infection. Jury's still out on which diagnosis will be the right one. Another guy got a flu shot a few months ago, but they injected him in the arm that he had been treated for lymphoma for a few years ago and now he's got to wear a compression sleeve for the rest of his life. My dad had a GP completely bungle a simple skin cancer removal a year or so ago, too.

I'm not anti-science or anti-medicine, but I hear too many horror stories to feel very confident if I have to go to the hospital.

So there's a woman in KC that they believe is the first case of community transmission.

Fuck and luckily they figured it out. As Sauto said our hospital is known as Death Valley and if it wouldn't have been a medical emergency I would have taken him else where.

Probably what Chief Roundup was referring to in his cryptic post.

Oh, and yes, they are.

I don't know the specifics, and this happened about 10 years ago. I obviously wasn't there and never personally spoke to any of the quacks that treated her. All I know is that she was misdiagnosed and suffered terribly for a long period of time because of it. They were so fixated on the wrong thing that everything else was ignored.

When I was a kid Kirksville had three hospitals. Now they have one, but it seems that if anybody has anything more serious than a hangnail they are sent to Columbia for treatment.
