Nzoner's Game Room>Four major art projects for new KCI terminal revealed
neech 10:50 PM 04-09-2021
The first of four major art projects for the new single terminal airport at KCI have been revealed.

More than 1,000 artists from around the world submitted inquiries after Kansas City announced an international search for artists.
The city said the four works of art were chosen because they either reflected the wonder of travel or Kansas City history.

The budget for artwork at KCI’s new terminal is $5.65 million. Kansas City’s single-terminal airport is expected to open on budget and on time in early 2023.

“The fact that we’ve been through a pandemic over the last year and yet this project remains on time, on schedule, and on budget is a testament to the good work of the team,” said Justin Meyer with the KC Aviation Department.

You can see the renderings of the art projects in the gallery below.

Entitled "Molten Swing"

Entitled "The Air up There"

Entitled "Ornithology"

Entitled "Fountain of Resonance"

"Molten Swing" looks kind of like a mosaic dog or cat to me, it might look cool though but not sure what to make of it at this point.

"The Air up There" simply looks like some lights on the ceiling, again it might look better when you're actually there I hope.

"Ornithology" reminds me of those attacking creatures in the Pitch Black movie. You just knew one of the artwork they chose would have a WTF moment and this is it.

"Fountain of Resonance" I approve of this one.
:-)

Thoughts?

I struck up a conversation yesterday at the airport with a guy who couldn’t navigate the self-checkout machine and I had to help him. Nice guy from Dallas - in town for the draft - and he mentioned the gender neutral restroom and rolled his eyes. I thought maybe he was referring to a single small gender neutral restroom and figured he was just being an old white man (like srvy but not a complete tool). Cool.

I headed to the gate and saw there was a restroom right next to it. The men’s room had a line in the middle of the afternoon and I was confused. The map showed that there was a restroom just a few minutes away and I headed toward that one.

You’re naturally predisposed to look for male and female visuals. There weren’t quite any. You saw nursing stations, etc and it was all a bit confusing. It was at that moment I saw a man and woman walking out from the same side of the restroom and realized that this gender neutral thing wasn’t just some small isolated experiment. It was the core experience. And it was likely why that men’s room near the gate was too crowded because this experiment was not for all.

A couple other guys and I locked eyes - confused - and we entered the arena. I honestly wanted a urinal as I just needed to piss and have zero interest in touching anything or lifting a seat unless it’s absolutely necessary. But it was obvious that wouldn’t be an option and I acceded to the normal stall protocol.

Walked out of there a couple minutes later. Black guy and I just looked at each other and were like, “Well, that was a new experience.”

At that moment, we were all Rosa Parks.

Business idea.... automatic toilet seat lifter. Stand at the toilet, step on a thing that goes down, which lifts the seat. Walk away, seat goes back down softly. I found one on Amazon, but only had 10 reviews, was 3.2 stars, and not available. Plenty of room for improvement and could be widely sold for public restrooms as well as home.

My toilet in my house has a body heat sensor, and it raises the lid when you walk into the bathroom. I really kind of like it. I feel like General Patton where the soldiers all jump to attention when I enter the room.

My point, though, is that an automated solution exists.

Mine actually has two different settings to raise either just the lid when someone enters the room or to raise the lid and the seat when someone (presumably male) stands directly in front of it. It's great in theory, but I can't get it to work Maybe my bathroom's not large enough or something, but when I put it on the gender setting it raises both the lid and the seat when you enter the room, and then my wife accuses it of sexism.

Wow, that's fancy! I found another solution where the cover is heavy enough to hold down the lid, but the lid itself is hinged or whatever to automatically go/be up.

I love that idea.

And I genuinely think if this gender neutral restroom idea has legs that it's the only solution going forward.

And Rain Man, if I remember from covid days, you had planned to go 100% bidet as an advantage in the next apocalypse. What happened there?

I'm 50 percent bidet, which I figure is sufficient to survive the next apocalypse.

The toilet paper savings is such that it'll pay for itself in probably 20 years, and from that point on I'm ahead of the game.

I guess it should be the other way around... turn around, put your heel down, and it'll lower the lid. And then when you're done, it'll lift automatically.

The logistics could be a bit awkward though.

I feel like a lot of people wouldn't step on the thing to raise the seat, they'd just pee all over it if they didn't want to lift it. However, if they need to sit, they'll figure it out.

At home? Fine.

At an airport by choice? You're a vile creature.

You should patent that. You might be villainized because it defaults toward the male, though.

Passenger travel continues to rise since the opening of KCI Airport’s new terminal. In March, KCI Airport experienced a 21.3% increase in passenger travel compared to 2022. As of this year, overall passenger travel has increased by 24%. 🛫 🧳https://t.co/Of95H9JF1j pic.twitter.com/FyvbVeiHMd

Passenger traffic is up everywhere. But I'm glad KC is joining the trend.

The doom and gloom that KCI could outright fail (barring another 911/covid type industry wide disaster) strikes me as pretty far fetched.

I was at the pickup point just this week at 5:00 pm and I was glad that there wasn't a long line of bumper to bumper cars.

But I'm still underwhelmed by the design. The actual curb area was triple parked cars mess.

I don't see why you couldn't have done three lanes, have a concrete island and then done three more lanes given how short the corridor was. Make the parking structure slightly smaller if that's what it would have taken to add extra width to the pickup area.
