That’s another thing. Remember that first 1/2 season post Matheny how the base running turned around. And the next year. Now, besides the young speedsters, they have slid back into not using their brains on the base paths. Getting too comfortable again. [Reply]

Agreed. For all the accolades Yadi gets for being such a good catcher, one thing that can’t be denied is the lack of strong leadership on this team over the last, what, 5+ years? [Reply]

we have seen this shit baseball recently. its a pure Matheny team at the end of his tenure. Poor base running, lackadaisical attitudes, everyone feeling comfortable, very little passion. They are either getting bad coaching or not listening. Maybe they got fat and happy because they overachieved last year and went to a NLCS?
This BS about it being a weird season, playing so many double headers etc. is just that BS. Your playing extra double headers because you, the players, didn’t follow the damn rules. You went to a casino, strip club, 19th hole bar whatever rumor is the real one, something happened you went out in public, partied without a mask on and then brought it back into the clubhouse. Just more of the same undisciplined lackadaisical conduct that we are seeing on the field. [Reply]

He's been really bad. I truly think he's drinking again.
Do you remember his infamous "look at that bench!!" abomination? Happened years ago.. I know guys that are STILL pissed off about one of the greatest comebacks in team history because of his concluded call of the game. [Reply]
“We still have a lot of questions on what we’re going to look like next year, especially from the financial models,” says Mo.
I guess we are being warned. You think we are cheap now, hold my beer.

John Mozeliak improving his ballclub is like me working out.
When you're looking for excuses, you will ALWAYS find one. And Mozeliak is always looking for excuses.
The Padres, Rays and A's have teams with none of the advantages the Cardinals have apart from leadership that knows what its doing. And meanwhile Mozeliak and his multi-billionare owner are crying poor and pouting because the team he's built is just too damn mediocre for him to know what to do with.
Think about that. For 4 straight years his excuse has been "we're not good enough or bad enough to pick a lane..."

Edit: For some reason I was thinking it was Fowler but yea DeJong and absolutely ridiculous. Junior High baseball level mistake. [Reply]

THAT'S ON YOU, PECKERHEAD!
Fire this ****ing clown.
He’s just following DeWitt’s orders.
The Cardinals don’t need to rebuild but the roster isn’t good enough as constructed, without additions, to do a lot of damage in the postseason.
I 100% think DeWitt is fine with being just OK and having a team win 85-90 games a year with PO appearances 3 out of 5 years and an occasional WS appearance.
The Cardinals are like the Chiefs from 2003-2006 at the end of Carl’s reign. [Reply]

You don't have to think it; speculation isn't necessary - he flat out SAID it. The Cardinals target 88 wins because that's enough for the post-season.

Then they hope to get lucky.
Then Mozeliak is towing the company line from his boss.
As long as the Cardinals win in the mid-80s consistently along with PO appearances, along with making $, Mo is safe.
Fuck, I wish Blues ownership owned the Cardinals. While they’re in it to make a profit(obviously), they let Armstrong make bold moves and go all in when he thinks it’s necessary. [Reply]

No doubt.
But good GMs can do that AND improve their teams. Again, look no further than organizations spending far less for far greater results.
Yeah, Mozeliak is scraping by because his owner set a low bar - but with the resources he has at his disposal, he should be doing FAR better and with little/no more risk.
The amount of capital he's pissed away is staggering. A team with no GM at all - just a guy who signs checks and promotes from within while letting pending FAs walk - would've built a better team than what Mozeliak's built since 2014.
He's done a spectacularly bad job and only the low expectations of DeWitt has allowed him to keep his job. [Reply]
