The Chiefs have reached an agreement with Sammy Watkins on a new 1-year deal that will pay him a base of $9m for 2020 with an incentive package that can reach $16m, a source tells me.
The move creates $5m in cap space for the Chiefs to operate this offseason.
Yes... because all that matters in football are sacks and TDs.
I agree the dude was over paid, but we are like 20-4 when he's healthy and plays an entire game. His impact is far greater than his individual stats. [Reply]
Yeah let's weaken the strongest part of the team. It would be concerning if money was committed to all these guys for long term deals, but the only guy we are really paying in Hill, who is worth every penny, and then we have Hardman on a rookie deal. The WR group is the last place to bitch about money IMO. [Reply]
Keeping Watkins preserves that "pick your poison" problem for defenses. So what if Watkins isn't getting touchdowns for a stretch? Tyreek is going off. Double both WR's? Kelce goes crazy. Put a top CB on Kelce? Watch Watkins put it down.
Add a QB with the mind of a savant and the arm strength of Zeus, and you're virtually unstoppable.
Think of it not as investing in a person, but in a scheme that has proven to be good enough to win championships. [Reply]
